Esta es la historia de un cantante español, contemporáneo del legendario Nino Bravo, que en 1973 alcanzó la fama para siempre gracias a la historia de una mujer que llevaba un colgante con una estrella de David.
Se trata, claro, de Juan Bau, nacido Juan Bautista Conca Moya el 24 de diciembre de 1948 en Aldaya, en la Comunidad Valenciana. Las críticas de las actuaciones de Bau en la gira de los festivales fueron variadas, pero su nombre es inoxidable aunque algunas veces lo hayan «matado».
Es que en el 2016 circuló una versión que daba a Juan Bau por fallecido. La «noticia» incluso terminó en la biografía del cantante en Wikipedia y motivó una declaración de pésame de Lolita Flores.
Juan Bau está vivo
«Sigue vivo y hemos hablado con él», señalaba jocosamente un programa de la época de la cadena radial española Ser.
«Tras difundirse la falsa noticia, un amigo del artista le informó por teléfono de su supuesto fallecimiento, con la consiguiente sorpresa para el cantante», comentaba el reporte.
«No sé cómo tomármelo, yo no tengo nada que ver», bromeó Bau, quien juró que «no se trata de un truco promocional» para mantenerlo en el candelero.
En todo caso, la presunta «muerte» del cantante demostró que sigue siendo un artista muy querido y recordado. Con Jeanette se viene presentado desde hace varios años no solo en España sino también en escenarios de América Latina.
El origen de un súper éxito
De hecho, un periódico de la República Dominicana, el Listín Diario, publicó en el 2018 un buen resumen de los orígenes del éxito que mantiene a Bau reconocido y con trabajo a ambos lados del Atlántico.
«La idea para la creación de esta joya musical surgió de una manera muy especial en el marco de un viaje Madrid-Londres que realizó Bau junto a su productor Pablo Herrero», contó la nota de Félix Melo.
El diario de Santo Domingo citó al propio cantante rememorando que, «hablando durante el trayecto», Herrero «me comentó sobre una amiga suya estudiante israelí» que «había terminado los estudios y se iba a su país».
«Parece ser que había algo entre los dos a nivel romántico y lógicamente la chica al marcharse le entregó un anillo» con una estrella de David, uno de los principales símbolos del judaísmo, señaló Bau.
«Le dije (a Herrero) vamos a intentar hacer una canción sobre este tema, y cuando llegué a Madrid después de varios días, Pablo tenía la canción prácticamente compuesta -siguió Bau-. Dos o tres días más adelante nos metimos en un estudio y la grabamos».
El cantante reconoció que es el tema «que me lanzó al mundo y es mi identidad musicalmente hablando».
Por cierto, «no puede faltar en mis conciertos», apuntaba en el 2018, adelantándose a las crónicas del 2024 que celebraron la inclusión de la canción en cada presentación.
La diferencia entre cantar bien y cantar mal
Herrero, que falleció en diciembre del 2023, formó junto a José Luis Armenteros una pareja de compositores poderosa, que firmó La estrella de David y, entre muchas otras, nada menos que Un beso y una flor y Libre, que el cantante Nino Bravo convirtió en éxitos para siempre.
Bau, por su parte, sigue girando de la mano de la canción sobre la novia israelí de un músico español. Su página de Facebook no deja lugar a dudas sobre la «deuda» que mantiene con el símbolo judío: la foto de portada muestra al cantante junto a una estrella de seis puntas.
Si bien no se acerca a las enormes cantidades de reproducciones que marcan los sucesos musicales modernos, la canción de Herrero interpretada por Bau acumulaba en noviembre del 2024 unas respetables 11 millones de visitas en Spotify.
Nada mal para un intérprete al que la escritora española Patricia Godes describió como el artista que, en los años 70, la ayudó a descubrir «la diferencia entre cantar bien y cantar mal, lo difícil que era cantar bien y lo bonita que podía ser la voz humana entonando melodías».
