«Había tal hedor que era imposible estar ahí por más de cinco minutos. Mis soldados no lo podían soportar y me rogaban para que los dejara ir. Pero teníamos una misión que cumplir», relató el oficial Anatoly Shapiro, el primero en entrar al lugar donde los nazis exterminaron a más de un millón de personas.

Los soviéticos liberaron a unos 500 prisioneros. El mundo pudo conocer la dimensión de la barbarie hitleriana, la consumación de un plan criminal para masacrar a los judíos de Europa y que se cobró seis millones de víctimas.

La fecha en que se liberó Auschwitz-Birkenau se recuerda como Día Internacional de Conmemoración en Memoria de las Víctimas del Holocausto. En Alemania se conmemora como Día Conmemorativo de las Víctimas del Nacionalsocialismo.

El acto central de conmemoración se realizó en la Sede del Holocausto en Buenos Aires y no se permitió el ingreso de periodistas por primera vez en su historia. El gobierno nacional junto al Museo son los habituales organizadores. Esta vez se decidió que no haya prensa.
