Assaf Rappaport, quien acaba de concretar la venta de su empresa Wiz al grupo Google por 32.000 millones de dólares, forma parte del grupo de emprendedores detrás de la adquisición del Canal 13 de la televisión israelí, que —al parecer— se convertirá en una emisora opositora al gobierno del actual primer ministro, Benjamin Netanyahu.

Según se informó, en una operación firmada el viernes último, la Fundación Merit Spread, respaldada por el grupo de emprendedores de alta tecnología liderado por Rappaport, adquirió el control del canal de televisión Reshet 13 a Len Blavatnik.

La venta fue anunciada por Access Industries, la firma a través de la cual Blavatnik controla el canal. La operación terminó siendo también una movida política, ya que Blavatnik había aceptado —y luego desechó— una oferta por parte de un grupo inversor liderado por el empresario de telecomunicaciones Patrick Drahi, un sostenedor de Netanyahu.

A través de un comunicado, la fundación de los emprendedores dijo que la operación se llevó a cabo porque «los ciudadanos de Israel merecen un canal de noticias independiente, patriótico y sólido».

Como en muchos países en el bloque occidental, el escenario de los medios de comunicación en Israel está muy marcado por la política. En la grilla de la TV, el Canal 14 es explícitamente de derecha y pro-Netanyahu, mientras que el Canal 12 (Keshet, parte de la familia de la productora de Hatufim y Falsa Bandera), el de mayor audiencia, es generalmente visto como «centrista.

Por su parte, el Canal 13, históricamente visto como liberal o centrista, pasará ahora a orientarse más hacia la centroizquierda sionista, y la emisora pública Kan (Canal 11, que produjo, entre otras, la súper exitosa serie Teherán) trata con bastante éxito de ser profesional e independiente, pero suele sufrir las presiones de los gobiernos de turno.

En el terreno de la prensa escrita, los analistas describen a Israel Hayom como un periódico que arrancó muy alineado a Netanyahu y que se distanció un poco en los últimos años, Haaretz a la izquierda, y Maariv e Iediot Aharonot en un centro flotante.

Con ese trasfondo, muchos comentaristas habían criticado el acuerdo inicial de Blavatnik con Drahi, una maniobra que —según el reporte de Times of Israel— fue vista «como una extensión de los esfuerzos» del gobierno «por ampliar su control sobre los medios de comunicación».

En cambio, la adquisición por parte de Assaf y sus socios a través de la fundación fue celebrada por el gremio de los trabajadores de la emisora.

El acuerdo, afirmó Matan Hodorov, presidente del sindicato, «no solo garantiza la estabilidad del canal» y de su redacción de noticias, «sino que también crea un motor de crecimiento sin precedentes en tecnología y gestión que puede devolver a nuestra organización al lugar que le corresponde en el mercado televisivo» israelí.

«Al respaldar a Merit —se lee en el comunicado de los emprendedores tecnológicos—, ponemos a su disposición recursos y energía nunca antes vistos en un canal de televisión» local, «con el objetivo de liderar la innovación digital y establecer un consenso unificador, sionista e israelí».

Un canal luchando por sobrevivir 

El acuerdo que convertirá a Merit en el accionista mayoritario del Canal 13 se anunció apenas dos días después de que los reguladores antimonopolio globales aprobaran la adquisición de Wiz por parte de Google, de Alphabet, el mayor exit tecnológico de la  historia del país.

Times of Israel apuntó que el Canal 13 «lleva años luchando por su supervivencia, con denuncias anteriores de despidos de periodistas por criticar a Netanyahu y al gobierno».

Rappaport y otros fundadores de empresas tecnológicas del grupo, añadió el informe, «criticaron públicamente al gobierno, en particular por la polémica reforma judicial» impulsada por Netanyahu, una feroz disputa que acaparaba la atención del país hasta el ataque terrorista de Hamas del 7 de octubre del 2023 y la consecuente guerra en Gaza.

Voceros de Access dijeron que la entrada de Merit contribuirá a asegurar el futuro del canal y permitirá una mayor inversión en contenido, así como una transformación digital acelerada. Se prevé que Merit se convierta en el accionista mayoritario, mientras que Access Industries y Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) conservarán participaciones minoritarias.

Hodorov, por su parte, afirmó que los trabajadores del canal «confiamos en que, detrás de Assaf, muchas figuras destacadas y diversas se unirán pronto al canal —inversores, directivos y periodistas de todo el espectro israelí— que querrán formar parte de una historia de éxito que estamos construyendo juntos».
