Durante más de dos siglos, los hebreos vivieron sometidos a trabajos forzados y a un régimen que anulaba su voluntad. Allí, en medio de esa situación, crecieron y se multiplicaron hasta convertirse en un pueblo grande y numeroso. Sin embargo, mientras permanecía esclavizado, ese pueblo todavía no había nacido plenamente porque seguía dominado por el tiránico Faraón.
El nacimiento del pueblo de Israel se produjo recién cuando adquirió la libertad y recibió la Ley en el monte Sinaí. Mientras una persona o un pueblo no puede ejercer su propia voluntad, es como si no existiera verdaderamente. Por eso, Pésaj marca el comienzo de la existencia del pueblo de Israel como entidad independiente.
La palabra Pésaj está relacionada con “saltear” o “cuidar”. Hace referencia al momento en que, durante la última de las diez plagas de Egipto, Dios “salteó” y “cuidó” las casas de los israelitas y castigó a los primogénitos egipcios. Ese episodio simboliza un principio fundamental: nadie tiene derecho a oprimir al otro. La liberación de Egipto fue una demostración de que el poder que se ejerce sobre la debilidad ajena termina siendo juzgado.
