Donde rezaban los escribas
En el Toledo de las tres culturas, cuando hebreo, árabe y castellano convivían en las mismas calles, existió en la judería vieja una sinagoga humilde, ligada a los escribas que copiaban la Torá. Por eso la llamaron Sofer, «escriba».
Los estudios históricos sitúan su construcción en torno a los siglos XII o XIII y su abandono tras los disturbios contra los judíos de 1391, cuando muchas familias sefardíes dejaron la ciudad.
No era un templo monumental como Santa María la Blanca o El Tránsito. Era un lugar cotidiano: de oración, de estudio, de tinta y pergamino. De vida.
La sinagoga que se perdió entre casas
Los documentos medievales la mencionan junto a viviendas conocidas como la Casa de la Higuera y la Atahona, cerca de la puerta de la judería y del actual entorno del Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes.
Con el paso de los siglos, las construcciones cambiaron, los nombres se borraron, los muros se ocultaron tras otros muros. La sinagoga desapareció sin ruido.
