El director del Museo de Auschwitz, Piotr Cywinski, fue honrado con la Orden Nacional de la Legión de Honor, la más alta condecoración otorgada por el Estado francés
Al presentar la distinción en la embajada francesa en Varsovia el jueves, el embajador de Francia en Polonia, Pierre Levy, dijo que Cywinski es un humanista “cuya voz se toma en cuenta en Francia”.
“Los últimos sobrevivientes nos están dejando. Tu misión se vuelve cada vez más difícil. A medida que la historia se desvanece lentamente, puede prevalecer el olvido, la ignorancia, la indiferencia o la negación. No dejemos que aparezca el vacío intelectual, en el que el mal está oculto”, dijo.
Levy también dijo que la República Francesa se identifica plenamente con el compromiso de Cywinski de luchar contra el racismo, el antisemitismo y la xenofobia.
En una carta leída en la ceremonia, el viceministro de Cultura y Patrimonio Nacional de Polonia, Jaroslaw Sellin, escribió que Cywinski no sólo ha abierto la posibilidad de visitar el Museo para dos millones de personas al año. También creó un lugar “observado por expertos internacionales como modelo, con los más altos estándares de cuidado de la memoria, que expresan los principios de autenticidad, preservando la integridad de los artefactos y las colecciones de archivos”.
El Museo de Auschwitz fue visitado en 2018 por más de 69,000 ciudadanos franceses. Francia es socia de la Fundación Auschwitz-Birkenau, cuyo objetivo es preservar la autenticidad de los restos del antiguo campo. Francia ha donado casi 5.7 millones de dólares al esfuerzo.
