Del 15 de marzo hasta el 11 de mayo se desató una hecatombe en Paraguay. Las lluvias, por lo general intensas durante esta época del año, fueron brutales.
En aquel periodo zonas de la región sufrieron de 100 a 400 mm de agua. Según el Ingeniero Miguel Kurita, de la Secretaria de Emergencia Nacional, el último evento de esta magnitud fue en 2014: «En ese entonces el evento afectó a 45,000 familias, hoy tenemos a 65,000.”
El golpe fue particularmente fuerte en el Departamento de Ñeembucú, donde los aguaceros afectaron 22,000 familias. “Los pobladores del interior del departamento perdieron todos sus cultivos de consumo” comentó el 14 de mayo Luis Benítez, gobernador de la región, “tardará unos seis meses para recuperarse. También los pequeños ganaderos están en una situación crítica, porque los campos se inundaron de agua.”
Ante esta situación el 18 de mayo partió hacia Asunción una misión de CADENA conformada por 12 personas, incluyendo a rescatistas, psicólogos, doctores y voluntarios de México, Argentina y Chile. Una vez en Asunción, el equipo sostuvo una junta primera junta con la Primera Dama, Silvana López Moreira, además de la Secretaria de Emergencias Nacionales, y el Ministerio de Salud.
Al terminar la reunión el equipo partió en un camión con dirección a la región de El Chaco: “El acceso a las comunidades fue muy complejo,” comentó Santiago Treviño, médico mexicano que participó como co-jefe de misión, “el camino se había inundado y había que atravesar como 1.5 metros lodo. “
“Fue una misión complicada, pero la entereza del equipo es lo que nos permitió sobrellevarla” mencionó Treviño, quien resaltó la importancia de estar ahí presentes para dar ayuda emocional, ”la conexión con las personas nos recuerda que siempre hay alguien que piensa en nosotros, siempre hay alguien dispuesto a tender una mano y que todos podemos hacer un cambio para reparar al mundo. Hacer tikun olam.”
En total el equipo atendió a 1500 personas por medio de consultas medias y atención psicológica. También se instalaron 200 filtros de agua Sawyer en 6 comunidades marginadas.
