Hyundai Motor Company realizará una amplia prueba de camiones alimentados con hidrógeno en Israel en 2020, según dos fuentes familiarizadas con el asunto que dialogaron con Calcalist bajo condición de anonimato. Una delegación de Hyundai visitó Israel el mes pasado y se reunió con ejecutivos en las oficinas del primer ministro, informaron las mismas fuentes.
La prueba será ejecutada por el minorista automotriz israelí Colmobil Ltd. y la compañía de transporte y logística Taavura Holdings Ltd., que posee la mayor flota local de camiones, agregaron las fuentes.
Los vehículos de hidrógeno han existido desde la década de 1960, pero nunca se han adoptado definitivamente debido a la alta disponibilidad y los bajos costos de la gasolina y el diésel. A diferencia de los vehículos que funcionan quemando combustible y creando contaminantes, los automóviles de hidrógeno utilizan un proceso electroquímico que convierte el hidrógeno y crea electricidad y agua como subproductos. La electricidad se almacena en la batería del vehículo y provoca que estos se muevan.
Esto se produce sólo días después de que el gigante industrial surcoreano Hyundai Heavy Industries aceptara pagar una multa de 47 millones de dólares por importar y vender ilegalmente motores diésel que no cumplen con las normas ambientales estadounidenses.

Entre 2012 y 2015, la compañía importó casi 2.300 vehículos equipados con motores diésel que contaminan más de lo autorizado por los estándares estadounidenses, según informó el departamento de Justicia de Estados Unidos.
Las regulaciones ambientales cada vez más estrictas implementadas en los últimos años han provocado que algunos fabricantes globales recurran a los vehículos de hidrógeno. Los fabricantes de camiones también se ven afectados por las nuevas regulaciones, ya que se consideran vehículos altamente contaminantes. Hyundai ya ha presentado un camión de hidrógeno que comenzó a operar en Europa a principios de este año, con una autonomía de 400 kilómetros. La compañía dijo que tiene la intención de comenzar a usar camiones de hidrógeno en Suiza y Nueva Zelanda en 2020.
Israel se considera un campo de pruebas de primer orden debido a su clima variado, pendientes extremas en las carreteras de Galilea y los Altos del Golán, y largos caminos en Aravah. Taavura es el representante oficial de la marca holandesa de camiones DAF Trucks en Israel, y tiene un centro técnico y logístico que ya recopila datos de su flota de camiones sobre parámetros como el estrés, el esfuerzo y el desgaste.
Israel actualmente no tiene infraestructura de abastecimiento de hidrógeno, pero se espera que el Ministerio de Energía emita una licitación para una prueba de concepto pronto.
