El primer ministro Benjamín Netanyahu aseguró que seguirá dirigiendo Israel pese a haber sido acusado de corrupción por el fiscal general. Sin embargo, el bloqueo político y la amenaza de elecciones hacen tambalearse la permanencia de quien ha llegado a ser el político más longevo en el cargo.

«Esta noche estamos presenciando un intento de un golpe de Estado contra el primer ministro con falsas acusaciones y en el proceso de investigaciones sucias y trágicas», cargó el jefe del Ejecutivo contra la decisión del fiscal general del Estado, Avichai Mandelblit.
Es que Mandelblit ha considerado que hay pruebas suficientes para acusar formalmente a Netanyahu de fraude, abuso de confianza -«que se refiere a la prohibición a los servidores públicos de explotar su cargo y su estatus para obtener favores personales», dijo- y cohecho, el delito más grave.
Netanyahu reaccionó cuestionando el sistema legal y pidió «investigar a los investigadores» formando un comité externo de asesoramiento para investigar a los fiscales que autorizan las investigaciones.
Decenas de simpatizantes, que pedían su permanencia, y de detractores, que le exigían dimitir, se reunieron a las puertas de su residencia cuando el primer ministro se dirigió a los israelíes en un discurso televisado y criticó la fecha elegida del anuncio, en el «momento más sensible políticamente desde el establecimiento del Estado».
El jueves fue un día sin precedentes en Israel: por primera vez en la historia, y tras el fracaso de Netanyahu y el centrista Benny Gantz para formar gobierno, el presidente, Reuvén Rivlin, tuvo que entregar el mandato al Parlamento (Knéset) que ahora tiene un último intento para evitar unas terceras elecciones en menos de un año.
La acusación de Netanyahu se sumó también a la historia al ser el primer jefe de Ejecutivo en ser acusado judicialmente mientras ostenta el cargo.
Gantz, líder de la coalición centrista Azul y Blanco (Kajol Laván), que se opuso a formalizar un gobierno de unidad dirigido por Netanyahu por estas sombras legales, aseguró que este ya no tiene «mandato público y moral para tomar decisiones trascendentales» para Israel.
«Debido a la preocupación, tanto si se demuestra que los cargos son verdaderos o no, Netanyahu tomará decisiones en su propio interés personal y para su supervivencia política, y no para el interés nacional», expresó Gantz.
La posibilidad de seguir negociando un gobierno de unidad entre las formaciones del Likud y Azul y Blanco se aleja ahora de cara a este período de 21 días que tiene el Parlamento para que uno de sus diputados consiga el apoyo de 61 legisladores (de un total de 120) e intente la formación del Ejecutivo.
En principio, Netanyahu tendrá que dejar las carteras ministeriales que retiene -Diáspora, Bienestar y Salud-, pero puede mantenerse en el cargo de primer ministro hasta que haya una sentencia firme. Además, puede solicitar la inmunidad al Parlamento, aunque la fragmentada cámara no le ha dado el apoyo necesario hasta ahora para crear gobierno.
De nuevo, la posición del nacionalista laico Avigdor Liberman volvería a ser determinante -como lo ha sido en este periodo de negociaciones- para darle una mayoría y recibir la inmunidad.
«Un día difícil para el Estado de Israel (…) tenemos que darle al primer ministro la oportunidad de demostrar su inocencia en la corte», adelantó Liberman.
El fiscal general envió una copia del documento de acusación al presidente del Parlamento, Yuli Edelstein, a fin de permitir este trámite, que debe deliberar un comité creado especialmente para ello, y que no se puede establecer sin un nuevo gobierno, por lo que se prevé que la situación judicial definitiva de Netanyahu se demore hasta mediados del año que viene.
«No dejaré que la mentira corra para siempre. Seguiré liderando el país por ley, tal como está escrito, continuaré liderando el país de manera responsable, con dedicación, con preocupación por la seguridad y el futuro de todos nosotros», concluyó Netanyahu en una jornada dramática.
