Un nuevo estudio presentado en la conferencia anual para la ciencia y el medio ambiente en la Universidad de Tel Aviv reveló una forma única de identificar y advertir a las personas sobre las condiciones que promueven incendios: los teléfonos inteligentes que todos tenemos en nuestros bolsillos.
Sí, suena extraño pero para su disertación doctoral bajo la guía del profesor Colin Price, director de la Escuela de Estudios Ambientales Porter de la Universidad de Tel Aviv, la estudiante Hofit Shachaf utilizó sensores de smartphones para medir las condiciones climáticas que juegan un papel esencial en la formación de incendios.
El estudio de Shachaf se centró en los datos de humedad recopilados durante un período de cuatro años por la aplicación WeatherSignal de OpenSignal instalada en 40.000 teléfonos inteligentes en todo el mundo
Cada teléfono inteligente tiene sensores incorporados que miden factores ambientales como la humedad, temperatura, presión atmosférica, campo magnético y la aceleración. Los sensores de humedad, por ejemplo, alertan cuando el usuario intenta conectar el teléfono a un cargador húmedo.
Según los investigadores, esta información se recopilaría de forma anónima y solo si el usuario acepta los términos.
Durante 2019, el clima extremadamente seco, las temperaturas inusualmente altas y los fuertes vientos han sido una combinación ideal para propagar extensos incendios forestales en muchos países.
Desde el 5 de septiembre en California, el incendio del sur -que aún arde- quemó unas 2.157 hectáreas desde el 5 de septiembre. En Australia, más de un millón de hectáreas fueron incineradas y seis personas perdieron la vida.
Shachaf enfatizó en que las alertas de incendios se vuelven cada vez más importantes a medida que la crisis climática empeora, lo que aumenta la frecuencia y la gravedad de los fenómenos meteorológicos extremos. “Hoy en día hay huracanes más poderosos en el mundo, sequías más intensas y lluvias e inundaciones más fuertes. Lo mismo ocurre con Israel. A medida que las olas de calor y las sequías se vuelvan más severas en esta región, veremos más y más incendios”, aseguró la investigadora.
