Hace exactamente 50 años, en la ciudad mexicana de Puebla, la selección de fútbol de Israel jugó su primer partido en una Copa Mundial de la FIFA.
Tras lograr un año antes la única plaza clasificatoria adjudicada a las confederaciones de Asia y Oceanía, Israel fue uno de los 16 países representados en la competencia más prestigiosa del mundo y hasta la fecha no logró volver a disputar este certamen.
El 2 de junio de 1970 fue el día del esperado debut ante Uruguay, luego semifinalista del torneo, y fue derrota 2-0. Días después el equipo israelí empató 1-1 ante Suecia y cerró su paso por México con un empate 0-0 ante Italia, subcampeona del apabullante Brasil liderado futbolísticamente por Pelé.
Los once israelíes que salieron a la cancha esa tarde fueron: Itzhak Visoker, Yisha’ayahu Schwager, Shmuel Rosenthal, Zvi Rozen, David Primo, Giora Spiegel, Itzhak Shum, Dani Shmulevich, Mordechai Spiegel, Rahamim Talbi y Yehoshua Feigenboim.
