Dos ciudadanos israelíes fueron detenidos en Ecuador en una presunta estafa en la venta de insumos médicos, informó la ministra de Gobierno, María Paula Romo.
Los dos individuos, cuyas identidades no han sido dadas a conocer, habrían tratado de vender mascarillas y pruebas de detección rápida de COVID-19 bajo una identidad falsa.
«Se detuvo a dos ciudadanos israelitas (..) a quienes se les encontró dinero en efectivo. Uno tenía tarjeta roja. Ambos estarían involucrados con hechos de compra de insumos médicos en la emergencia», dijo Romo por redes sociales.
Aparentemente, los dos individuos habrían falsificado documentos para hacerse pasar por representantes de la Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) en Ecuador.
Y agregó que la falsificación «tenía una gran audacia».
Los dos sospechosos fueron detenidos en la provincia de Santa Elena, en el suroeste del país y uno de sus balnearios más conocidos.
Romo agregó que los detenidos tenían en su poder 100.000 dólares, y que al allanar su casa en Santa Elena se encontraron otros 200.000 dólares y tres coches de alta gama.
Uno de los sospechosos tiene orden de detención en Estados Unidos y Panamá por estafa, por lo que el Gobierno ecuatoriano trabaja con las Embajadas estadounidense e israelí para esclarecer el caso.
La Embajada israelí en Ecuador ha declinado confirmar o desmentir la información.
La ministra informó del caso en una jornada en la que la Policía ecuatoriana, junto a la Fiscalía General del Estado, realizó una vasta operación contra la corrupción durante la pandemia del coronavirus.
En una comparecencia conjunta, la fiscal general del Estado, Diana Salazar, informó de la detención de 17 personas, entre ellos el ex presidente Abdalá Bucaram, en 37 allanamientos en dos provincias.
«Hemos realizado un total de 37 allanamientos, tanto en la provincia de Pichincha (cuya capital es Quito), como en la provincia del Guayas (Guayaquil)», refirió la fiscal.
Los delitos que están siendo objeto de investigaciones corresponden a los de peculado (malversación de fondos públicos), tráfico de influencias y delincuencia organizada, en relación a los detenidos en Guayas.
Mientras que en Pichincha las pesquisas versan sobre un caso relacionado con presuntos sobreprecios en la adquisición de insumos médicos en la empresa de Agua Potable y se investiga la presunta comisión del delito peculado.
La fiscal general indicó que la presunta trama de delincuencia organizada en Guayas «agrupa a toda una estructura que ha venido operando precisamente en la adquisición de insumos médicos» mientras Ecuador vivía uno de los momentos más duros de su historia a causa del virus.
En relación a este caso fueron detenidos el ex presidente y un ex director del hospital Teodoro Maldonado del Instituto Ecuatoriano de la Seguridad Social (IESS).
