Nichols dijo que el hombre -a quien describió como mayor y corpulento, con los dientes dañados por años de abuso de metanfetamina- le había rogado que le salvara la vida. “No me deje morir doctor”, expresó el paciente. «Cuando vi el tatuaje de la SS, me pregunté qué habría pensado él si hubiera sabido que un médico judío lo estaba tratando en ese momento».

El hombre había sido trasladado de urgencia al hospital por dificultades respiratorias. «Estaba asustado. Le prometí que trabajaríamos duro para cuidarlo y mantenerlo con vida», sostuvo Nichols, admitiendo que se preguntaba qué habría sucedido si los roles se hubieran invertido.
