Lo que hace imposible negociar con Irán, el Estado Islámico, Hamás o cualquier otro grupo islamista es que sus líderes creen que actúan conforme a la inmutable palabra de Dios. Norteamérica, Israel u otros musulmanes con los que no estén de acuerdo no pueden hacer nada que los satisfaga excepto someterse (la palabra árabe islam significa “sumisión”). Como dijo el clérigo egipcio Mohamed Husein Yaqub en un sermón televisado en 2009:Si los judíos nos dejaran Palestina, ¿empezaríamos a amarlos? Por supuesto que no. Los judíos son infieles, no porque yo lo diga, sino porque lo dice Alá (…) No son nuestros enemigos porque ocupen Palestina; serían nuestros enemigos aunque no hubieran ocupado nada.
Hamás, Hezbolá, la Yihad Islámica y otros grupos terroristas no ocultan sus intenciones. La carta fundacional de Hamás insta explícitamente a la destrucción de Israel y no distingue entre israelíes y judíos: «Nuestra lucha contra los judíos es muy grande y muy seria (…) Persigue izar la bandera de Alá sobre cada pulgada de Palestina (…) Es uno de los eslabones en la cadena de la lucha contra los invasores sionistas (…) El Profeta, que Alá lo bendiga y le conceda la salvación, ha dicho: “El Día del Juicio no llegará hasta que los musulmanes combatan a los judíos [matando a los judíos], cuando el judío se ocultará tras piedras y árboles. Las piedras y los árboles dirán: ‘Oh, musulmanes, o Abdalá, hay un judío detrás de mí, ven y mátalo’” (…) No hay solución para la cuestión palestina, salvo mediante la yihad. Las iniciativas, propuestas y conferencias internacionales son todo pérdidas de tiempo y vanos esfuerzos. Palestina es territorio islámico».
Por desgracia, esto explica por qué “resolver el conflicto con los palestinos”, o incluso reconocer un Estado palestino, no traerá la paz y la tranquilidad a Oriente Medio.
La atención del islamismo radical sobre Israel actúa fácilmente como elemento para unir a las masas en Oriente Medio y Europa; sin embargo, el objetivo de la yihad, para muchos musulmanes, va más allá de eliminar o someter a los judíos israelíes. Según el califa Omar ben al Jatab, ningún territorio que haya estado ocupado por musulmanes puede ser entregado. Ningún régimen árabe (o una serie de regímenes que actúen juntos) tiene derecho a traicionar ese legado y a rendir parte alguna de ese territorio, sea en Israel o en España (Al Ándalus). Reconquistar las tierras se considera un solemne deber religioso, pero dicha obligación no acaba ahí: como un reclutador del Estado Islámico explicó a Der Spiegel, el Corán dice que debe matarse y expulsarse a los infieles allá donde se les encuentre.
Los islamistas no tienen prisa por alcanzar sus metas. Un proverbio árabe dice: “Un hombre que logra la venganza tras cuarenta años está actuando precipitadamente”. Ahmed Yusef, asesor político del entonces primer ministro palestino, Ismaíl Haniyeh, de Hamás, lo dijo todo con el título de su libro: El fin del Estado judío: mera cuestión de tiempo.
Los extremistas musulmanes confían en que el tiempo juegue a su favor, en parte porque están a punto de conseguir armas nucleares. Una vez Irán y otros países islámicos que probablemente sigan su ejemplo adquieran dicha capacidad, contarán con los medios militares para chantajear a sus vecinos ricos en petróleo, destruir a Israel y amenazar a Europa. Puede que entonces Occidente se dé cuenta de que está en una guerra de religión.
