La vicepresidenta de Estados Unidos, Kamala Harris, elogió a una estudiante universitaria que acusó a Israel de “genocidio étnico”.

El episodio ocurrió el martes pasado en la Universidad George Mason, durante un evento que marca el Día Nacional de Registro de Votantes.

En un segmento de preguntas y respuestas, una estudiante expresó su consternación por la ayuda de EE.UU. a Arabia Saudita, así como al sistema de defensa de misiles Iron Dome de Israel.

«Veo que durante el verano hubo protestas y manifestaciones en números astronómicos apoyando a Palestina. Pero luego, hace solo unos días, se asignaron fondos para seguir respaldando a Israel, lo que perjudica a mi corazón, porque es un genocidio étnico y el desplazamiento de personas, lo mismo que sucedió en Estados Unidos, y estoy seguro de que ustedes saben”, le dijo la estudiante directamente a Harris.

“Los estadounidenses están luchando por la falta de atención médica, atención médica pública y viviendas asequibles. Todo este dinero termina por inflamar a Israel y respaldar a Arabia Saudita y todo eso. Creo que la gente habla muy a menudo de lo que necesita y siento que falta escuchar”, agregó.

Asintiendo con la cabeza, Harris luego dijo que estaba «contenta» de que le planteara el problema y la elogió por expresar «su verdad».

“Se trata del hecho de que tu voz, tu perspectiva, tu experiencia, tu verdad no se deben reprimir. Se deben escuchar, ¿verdad? Y una de las cosas por las que estamos luchando en una democracia, ¿verdad?», expresó la vicepresidenta.

Además, aseveró: “La unidad nunca debe ser a expensas de decirle a nadie personalmente que, por el bien de la unidad, ‘Oh, cállate sobre esa cosa. Suprime esa cosa. No nos ocupemos de eso’. Eso no es unidad. La verdadera unidad es que todos en esa sala tienen voz. El punto que está haciendo sobre la política que se relaciona con la política de Medio Oriente, la política exterior, todavía tenemos debates saludables en nuestro país sobre cuál es el camino correcto, y la voz de nadie se debe suprimir al respecto».
