Pesaj comenzaba dentro de pocos instantes.
Estaba en medio del Bronx y el tren en el que viajaba sufrió un desperfecto. Salí y empecé a caminar. Preguntaba acerca de una dirección.Recuerdo que un alma caritativa me dijo: “¡Hijo,tienes un largo
camino aun!”
Esa misma tarde, un grupo de estudiantes de la Ieshivá en Brooklyn había terminado la cocción de las últimasmatzot de Pesaj. Corría el año 1958, y el Lubavitcher Rebe acostumbraba a darmatzá amasada
amano a los iehudim como regalo espiritual antes de Pesaj. El libro místico, Zohar, explica que la matzá es el “pan de fe,” y comiéndolo se nutre el alma. Yo tenía 16 años y tenía que volver a casa en el Bronx, que estaba bastante lejos. Cuando me acerqué, el Rebe me dio matzá y me preguntó si podía entregar algunas a una familia.
Lo mejor hubiera sido que tomara un taxi desde la estación del subte, pedirle al chofer que esperara,entregar la matza, y llegar a casa a tiempo para nuestro Seder familiar. Pero era demasiado tarde para tomar un taxi. Encontré la dirección que resultó ser un proyecto de albergue para ciegos. Golpeé la puerta y vino un hombre sin camisa,tatuajes y una barriga enorme. “Perdón, usted es el Sr. Fulano de Tal?” pregunté. “Sí” dijo.
Noté la hogaza de pan de centeno en medio de la mesa, definitivamente no se trataba de una comida de Seder tradicional. Dije: “El Rebe me envió”
“¿El Rebe? Oh, por favor, entre” dijo. En la cocina diminuta había una mesa pequeña, algunas sillas y un plato caliente. Yo mismo no entendía lo que estaba haciendo allí, entregando la matzá a una familia que no estaba celebrando Pesaj.
Le pregunté al hombre si quería realizar un Seder.
Estuvo de acuerdo y llamó a su esposa. Ella entró, visiblemente embarazada, con dos pequeñas niñas, quizás de cinco o seis años. Ambas niñas eran ciegas.
Limpiamos la mesa. Puse una kipá en la cabeza del hombre y comenzamos el Seder. Intenté recordarlas bendiciones en el orden apropiado, pero era difícil sin
una Hagadá. Comimos lamatzá y usamos agua y vasos de papel para evocarlas cuatro copas de vino.Intenté pensarlo que el Rebe haría si estuviera en mi lugar. Empecé a decirles algunas cosas que había aprendido del Rebe. Les dije que tenemos que tener fe. En esta noche, Di-s liberó a nuestros antepasados de la esclavitud, y Él nos liberará,también. Ellos parecían absorber cada palabra.
Les dije que en Pesaj, salimos de nuestro Egipto personal a la libertad, y que Di-s no pone sobre nuestros hombros más de lo que podemos llevar.Una vez que lo sabemos y lo creemos, nos liberamos.
Cantamos las canciones con las niñas y el tiempo voló. A la 1:00 de la mañana, la mujer puso a las niñas a dormir y tenía que preguntarle al hombre cómo conoció al Rebe. Resultó ser que era un curtidor de
cueros y conocía a un rabino que trabajaba en otra sección de la planta.
La esposa del curtidor había quedado nuevamente embarazada. Existía una fuerte posibilidad de que este niño,también, naciera ciego, por lo que su doctor recomendó un aborto. El hombre estaba muy
deprimido y no sabía qué hacer. Le preguntó a este rabino, que sugirió que escribieran una carta al Rebe de Lubavitch. El Rebe les respondió que debían tener fe en Di-s y tener el niño.
Cuando estaba a punto de salir, el hombre dijo: “Mi esposa y yo no estábamos seguros acerca de esto. ¿Cómo se supone que tenemos que tener fe? ¿Cómo se supone que debemos tener esperanza? Pero esta noche, oyéndote hablar de la fe y cómo Di-s nos da la fuerza para superar nuestro Egipto personal, entendemos.”
Su hijo nació con la visión perfecta. Con el tiempo, perdí la huella de esta familia, pero después de años supe que las hijas se habían casado y que cada una tenía varios niños, y todos veían a la perfección…
Describir el amor del Rebe por cada iehudí es imposible. Por eso, decidí escribir esta nota.
