El escritor polaco Martin Gray, famoso por su novela «En nombre de todos los míos» en la que narra su experiencia durante el Holocausto judío de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, falleció a los 93 años en su domicilio de Ciney (sur de Bélgica).
La Policía de Namur confirmó su defunción y aseguró que, pese a que su cuerpo se encontró en su piscina, «no hay nada que sospechar» sobre su fallecimiento, informó la agencia Belga.
Nacido en Varsovia en 1922, Gray alcanzó fama mundial por su obra autobiográfica «En nombre de todos los míos», en la que cuenta su vida desde su nacimiento hasta 1970, cuando perdió a su mujer y cuatro hijos en un incendio forestal en Francia.
El libro narra su experiencia siendo un joven judío en el gueto de Varsovia durante la ocupación nazi, sus vivencias en un campo de exterminio y también su vida después de la guerra, cuando emigró a Estados Unidos, donde vivía su abuela, y cambió su nombre original de Mieczyslaw Grajewski por Martin Gray.
En EEUU se convirtió en vendedor de antigüedades y estableció una empresa de comercialización de reliquias con presencia en Estados Unidos, Cuba, Canadá y Europa.
Antes de hacer las Américas, el escritor llegó a ser capitán del ejército soviético y participó en la batalla de Berlín, la última gran batalla en Europa de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, según la biografía del literato.
En 1960 el escritor se instaló en Tanneron, a las afueras de Cannes (Francia) y comenzó a escribir sus memorias de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, que no terminó hasta después de 1970, cuando su mujer y sus cuatro hijos fallecieron en un incendio forestal, una desgracia que marca el final de su libro más conocido.La historia de «En nombre de todos los míos» dio el salto a la gran pantalla en 1983, en un largometraje del mismo nombre dirigido por Robert Enrico y protagonizado por Michael York.
Sin embargo, la historiadora del Holocausto Gitta Sereny aseguró en un artículo publicado en 1979 en «New Statesman» que su libro lo escribió realmente Max Gallo y que Gray nunca llegó a estar en el campo de concentración de Treblinka (Polonia).
Además, en 1990 el diario polaco «Nowiny Rzeszowskie» publicó una entrevista con el capitán del ejército polaco durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial Wacklaw Kopisto -participante en una de las batallas que Gray narra en su novela-, en la que tras mostrarle una foto del escritor en su época como militar afirmó que no le había visto en su vida.
Tras el éxito de la novela, Gray publicó otros once libros, todos escritos originalmente en francés y con carácter autobiográfico.
Su segunda obra, cuyo título original fue «La vie renaîtra de la nuit» («La vida renacerá de la noche») abarca el periodo entre 1970 y 1977, el año en que el conoció a su segunda mujer.
En 2001 el escritor se instaló en el distrito bruselense de Uccle, antes de trasladarse en 2012 a Ciney, un municipio en el sureste de Bélgica que un año más tarde le declararía ciudadano ilustre. EFE
