El Partido Laborista de Jeremy Corbyn se sitúa en cabeza en las elecciones municipales en Inglaterra con 41 municipalidades y 779 concejales, según datos provisionales difundidos por las autoridades electorales.
Con los sufragios de 80 de 124 municipios escrutados, la formación de Corbyn, a la que se auguraba una gran pérdida, ha cedido por ahora solo una municipalidad y 24 concejales, respecto a los que ganó en 2012.
Las encuestas habían vaticinado que, bajo el contestado liderazgo del izquierdista Corbyn, con poco apoyo dentro de su propio grupo parlamentario, la formación podía perder hasta 150 concejales.
A falta de terminar el recuento, los conservadores del primer ministro, David Cameron, han aumentado 5 concejales en Inglaterra, hasta 470, y mantienen 20 municipalidades, mientras que el Partido Liberal Demócrata suma 8 concejales, hasta 173, y conserva dos ayuntamientos.
El eurófobo y xenófobo Partido de la Independencia del Reino Unido (UKIP), dirigido por Nigel Farage, experimenta un destacado avance al ganar 20 concejales, de los ocho que sacó en 2012, aunque no consigue ninguna municipalidad.
El Partido Verde pierde un concejal y se sitúa en 12, según los datos dados a conocer hasta ahora.
El escrutinio de los votos es lento debido a que cada uno de los distritos electorales hace su propio recuento a mano, sin un sistema centralizado, por lo que los resultados de la alcaldía de Londres no se conocerán hasta esta tarde.
Además de las elecciones municipales en Inglaterra, se celebraron autonómas en Gales, Irlanda del Norte y Escocia, donde han arrasado los independentistas del Partido Nacionalista Escocés (SNP).
Las elecciones municipales, y hasta cierto punto las autonómicas, se leen como un barómetro del respaldo a los liderazgos de Corbyn y Cameron, en la primera cita electoral después de las elecciones generales de mayo de 2015.
De momento, el Partido Laborista ha registrado grandes pérdidas en el Parlamento escocés, donde se disputa con los «tories» la posición de primer partido de la oposición.
En Gales, donde se han adjudicado solo 47 de 60 escaños de la Asamblea galesa, los laboristas, liderados allí por Carwyn Jones, mantienen su dominio, pero pierden un diputado, mientras que los nacionalistas de Plaid Cymru ganan uno y se quedan con siete y los conservadores pierden uno y tienen también siete.
Según estos datos provisionales, destaca de nuevo el avance del UKIP, que irrumpe en la Asamblea de Gales con sus primeros dos diputados.
