Dos palomas alzaron este domingo el vuelo empujadas por las manos del papa Francisco y del patriarca armenio Karekin II, como símbolo de paz y reconciliación frente a las cercanas y clausuradas fronteras entre Turquía y Armenia.
El acto del líder de la Iglesia Católica se produjo horas después de la polémica del Vaticano con Turquía, que acusó al Santo Padre de mostrar una mentalidad propia de las “Cruzadas” por haber reconocido el genocidio de los armenios en la época otomana.
Como última etapa del viaje de tres días que el Sumo Pontífice ha realizado a Armenia, ambos líderes visitaron este domingo el antiguo monasterio de Khor Virap, donde permaneció encerrado Gregorio I el Iluminador, patrón del país y autor de su cristianización en el año 301 d.C.
El edificio se encuentra a poca distancia de la frontera turca y desde ese lugar, pueden disfrutarse algunas de las mejores vistas del monte Ararat, símbolo de Armenia pero en territorio turco debido a la pérdida territorial que la nación asiática ha sufrido a lo largo del tiempo.
Francisco y Karekin II llegaron alrededor de las 17:00 hora local (las 13:00 horario GMT) y fueron recibidos por el prior del monasterio, que los condujo hasta el pozo de San Gregorio, donde encendieron una vela en conmemoración del primer apóstol de Armenia.
Luego de haber rezado en la capilla adyacente, el patriarca y la máxima autoridad del Vaticano pronunciaron una oración.
Finalmente, ambos salieron del edificio y, desde una terraza cercana, liberaron a dos palomas como símbolo de paz para el mundo y para un país, Armenia, que vive tensas relaciones con sus vecinos: en el oeste con Turquía y en el este con Azerbaiyán.
La liberación de las palomas tiene especial significado ya que, según la riquísima tradición de este país caucásico, fue en el Monte Ararat, de cumbres perennemente nevadas, donde encalló el Arca de Noé al descender las aguas del Diluvio Universal.
Una paloma enviada desde esa nave, según la tradición, regresó a la embarcación con una rama de olivo, en definitiva, habiendo recogido frutos.
Son los frutos de la paz los que Francisco quiere que se alcancen en Armenia con la vecina Turquía, enfrentados durante un siglo por la matanza de los pueblos armenios durante las deportaciones desde Anatolia orquestadas por los otomanos en 1915.
Una cuestión que Ereván no olvida, que está muy presente aún en la conciencia colectiva del país, y que califica de genocidio, un término rechazado y denostado por Ankara, que aunque reconoce los crímenes los considera una consecuencia más de la Primera Guerra Mundial.
En abril de 2015 Francisco desencadenó un enorme vendaval al hablar directamente de genocidio en el Vaticano, suscitando así una crisis diplomática con Ankara, y en este viaje ha acudido al centro del poder político de Armenia en su capital, Ereván, para repetir la palabra de la discordia.
Y es que, según explicó el vocero vaticano, Federico Lombardi, su intención no fue la de reabrir viejas heridas sino la de hablar claramente y establecer las bases para una posible reconciliación, reconociendo los hechos como fueron.
El Papa y el patriarca apostólico armenio además dejaron este domingo por escrito y en una declaración común que la masacre de armenios a manos otomanas en 1915 fue un “genocidio”.
En ese documento recordaron que ya el papa Juan Pablo II calificó esos hechos como “el primer genocidio del siglo XX”.
