La red social estadounidense Twitter anunció el martes que suspendió 376.890 cuentas en los seis últimos meses en el marco de su lucha contra las publicaciones que hacen apología del terrorismo, un 60% más que en el período anterior.
Twitter comenzó a dar estas cifras hace un año. En total, la red social eliminó 636.248 cuentas por ese motivo en desde el 1 de agosto de 2015 hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2016.
La empresa indicó que desde 2010 forma parte de una alianza con la organización de investigación estadounidense Lumen, que actúa como «tercera parte independiente» y a la que la red social le proporcionará, salvo expreso pedido contrario, una copia de las solicitudes de supresión de cuentas de manera que «cada uno pueda ver qué tipo de contenido fue retirado y quién hizo la solicitud».
Twitter, sin embargo, dijo que se reserva el derecho de no proporcionar cierta información a Lumen, como las direcciones personales y los números de teléfono, por razones de confidencialidad y de respeto de la vida privada.
Las solicitudes de información de las autoridades gubernamentales aumentaron un 7% en comparación con el período anterior, pero fueron sobre un 13% de cuentas menos, precisó.
En cuanto a las solicitudes de eliminación de usuarios, se incrementaron un 13%, pero también sobre un 37% de cuentas menos.
Twitter también dijo que en Estados Unidos, el FBI había autorizado a informar sobre las solicitudes de vigilancia específicas de dos cuentas, levantando el secreto que pesaba sobre estas peticiones a Twitter.
La red social dedica, en su informe, un apartado a las cuentas de periodistas y de medios «reconocidos», donde señala haber recibido de autoridades de todo el mundo 88 peticiones de eliminación de tuits de esos usuarios. Sin embargo, afirman no haber tomado medidas «en la mayoría de los casos», con algunas excepciones para Alemania y Turquía, país del que provinieron el 88% de esas solicitudes.
