El presidente de Portugal honra a Sousa Mendes, salvador de miles de judíos

El presidente otorgará título póstumo a Aristides Sousa Mendes (1885-1954) con la Gran Cruz de la Orden de la Libertad, a 63 años de la muerte del cónsul portugués.

De acuerdo con la agenda del presidente de Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, se rendirá homenaje al ex cónsul portugués que durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial salvó del régimen nazi a miles de Judíos y otros refugiados en un acto celebrado en la Cámara de Passal.

 Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Aristides de Sousa Mendes emitió dicha orden en Burdeos, Francia, visto sin la autorización del Gobierno encabezado por António de Oliveira Salazar.

La Orden de la Libertad “pretende distinguir los servicios prestados en defensa de los valores de la civilización, la promoción de la dignidad de la persona humana y la causa de la libertad”.

Aristides de Sousa Mendes había sido premiado en 1986 con el grado de Oficial de la Orden de la Libertad y en 1995, con la Gran Cruz de la Orden de Cristo.

La Cámara de Passal, nombrado Monumento Nacional en 2011, fue el motivo del inicio de las obras para evitar su ruina.

Este mes, el Ministro de Cultura, Luís Filipe Mendes Castro, presidió una ceremonia de firma de documentos que definen la cooperación entre la Fundación Mendes Aristides de Sousa, Cámara de Sal Carregal y el Centro de Dirección Regional de Cultura, para la finalización de la segunda fase de las obras en la Cámara de Passal.

La segunda y última fase de remodelación de la parte interior y la musealización Passal Casa representa una inversión de 800.000 euros.
