La Audiencia de Düsseldorf abrió el juicio contra el presunto autor de un atentado xenófobo cometido hace 17 años en una estación de trenes cercana, en el que resultaron heridos 10 inmigrantes procedentes de la antigua Unión Soviética, entre ellos seis judíos.
Al acusado, con un largo historial delictivo y militante neonazi, se le imputa intento de asesinato por motivos racistas y autoría del atentado cometido con un artefacto explosivo activado a distancia contra un grupo de doce extranjeros que acudía a su clase de alemán.
Resultaron heridos tres hombres y siete mujeres, una de ellas embarazada, que perdió a su hijo a consecuencia del ataque, cometido en julio del 2000.
El atentado desató en ese momento un fuerte debate, en el ámbito político y entre la opinión pública, acerca del antisemitismo y la creciente xenofobia en Alemania.
Las investigaciones no fructificaron en ninguna pista concreta, pese a que se siguieron más de 300, se interrogó a 1.500 testigos o personas presuntamente vinculadas con lo ocurrido y se ofreció una recompensa de 120.000 marcos (60.000 euros) a cambio de información relevante.
Finalmente fue el ahora procesado, identificado como Ralf S. y de 51 años, quien estando en una cárcel por otro delito le contó a un compañero de prisión que había cometido un atentado para “hacer volar por los aires a unos extranjeros”.
El acusado era conocido ya entonces como neonazi, tenía una tienda de artículos militares en la zona donde se cometió el atentado y los vecinos le temían porque solía patrullar de noche con traje de camuflaje y con su perro.
La policía le detuvo entonces como sospechoso, pero poco después fue puesto en libertad por falta de pruebas concluyentes.
Tras su relato al compañero de prisión, quien informó a los responsables de la penitenciaría, se reabrió la investigación, se revisaron las actas y finalmente se le abrió acusación formal.
