El Curso de Pilotos de las Fuerzas Aéreas Israelíes (FAI) es un curso intensivo de 3 años en la Academia de Vuelo en la Base Hatzerim. La Academia de Vuelo entrena a tripulaciones para 5 diferentes profesiones: pilotos, navegantes, pilotos de transporte, pilotos de combate y pilotos de helicóptero. Durante tres años, los cadetes realizan un curso formado por cinco etapas.
1. La etapa de “preparación”
El objetivo principal de esta etapa es enseñarle a los cadetes como ser soldados de las FDI y de la FAI.
En el entrenamiento básico, los cadetes del Curso de Pilotos aprenden disciplina militar y puntualidad. Durante este periodo, ellos también realizan entrenamientos intensivos de infantería, campos de tiro y ejercicios para examinar cómo los cadetes en reaccionan situaciones estresantes.
En esta etapa los cadetes realizan un mes de vuelos en el Grob G 120s para examinar sus las habilidades de vuelo. Adicionalmente, los cadetes completan cursos de estudio que incluyen temas como las matemáticas, la física y la aerodinámica.
2. La etapa “Básica”
El énfasis de esta etapa es entrenar a los cadetes a convertirse en oficiales.
En esta etapa, además de continuar con los entrenamientos intensivos de infantería, los cadetes realizan entrenamientos de rescate y cursos de paracaidismo. Los cursos son realizados en equipos pequeños, los cuales son guiados por tripulaciones de aire experimentados.
Además del entrenamiento físico, los cadetes pasan por una serie de cursos académicos de seis semanas sobre aerodinámica, estructura de aeroplanos y otras materias básicas que utilizan en la academia de vuelo.
Al final de la etapa “Básica”, hay un etapa de examinación. La examinación consiste de volar aeroplanos más complejos. Los cadetes que pasan los exámenes lo celebran con una ceremonia en la cima de Mesada, reciben sus pins de la FAI y pasan a la próxima etapa.
3. Habilidades “preliminares” de vuelo
La tercera etapa del curso se enfoca en las habilidades básicas para volar un avión. A diferencia de las fases anteriores, esta etapa está compuesta principalmente de vuelos. De acuerdo con la formación de vuelo de cada cadete, ellos estudian mecanismos de vuelo, aplicaciones de computadora, estadísticas, administración y algebra.
4. El año de educación
Al final de la etapa preliminar, los cadetes comienzan oficialmente con sus estudios académicos en la Academia de Vuelo y obtienen créditos para su licenciatura.
A pesar de que los cadetes realizan cursos académicos durante todo el curso, esta etapa está dedicada solamente para estudios académicos intensivos. El año académico es dividido en tres semestres.
Basado en los puntajes académicos, preferencias y otros factores, los cadetes son asignados a uno de los siguientes cursos académicos: Matemáticas y Ciencias de la Computación, Tecnología de Información y Administración, Economía y Administración, Política, Gobierno y Administración. Adicionalmente, ellos realizan cursos que incluyen lecturas de física, aerodinámica, meteorología, sistemas de armas y navegación y la historia de las FDI y la FAI.
5. La etapa “Avanzada”
Durante la etapa final del curso, los cadetes vuelan en aeronaves operacionales de la FAI y adquieren habilidades avanzadas de vuelo. Al mismo tiempo, ellos completan su licenciatura y comienzan a estudiar sistemas de armas.
