Cuando cientos de incon­dicionales fans del club de fútbol de Verona corearon “Adolf Hitler es mi amigo” y expusieron una esvástica, las comunidades judías de Italia protestaron.

Los funcionarios locales inicialmente descartaron el incidente -que fue filmado y circuló en las redes sociales por los llamados “ultras”- como una “travesura”. La condena solo llegó varios meses después, después de otro video, esta vez profanan­do objetos cristianos.

Las expresiones racistas y antisemitas en Italia se han vuelto más audaces, generali­zadas y violentas. La retórica anti-migrante está desempe­ñando un papel sin preceden­tes en la configuración de la campaña para las elecciones nacionales del 4 de marzo en el país, que muchos dicen que está empeorando las ten­siones e incluso fomentando la violencia.

Los crímenes de odio moti­vados por prejuicios raciales o religiosos en Italia aumen­taron más de 10 veces, de 71 incidentes en 2012 a 803 en 2016, según las estadísticas de la policía. El período de cinco años correspondió a una explo­sión en la llegada de inmi­grantes.

El último hecho de violen­cia se produjo el 3 de febrero cuando un extremista de de­recha disparó e hirió a seis inmigrantes africanos en la pequeña ciudad de Macera­ta, en el centro de Italia. El hecho siniestro generó una condena generalizada, pero no universal.

El presunto pistolero, Luca Traini, fue un candidato fa­llido para la derechista y antimigrante Liga del Norte el año pasado. La policía in­cautó la propaganda nazi y de supremacía blanca de su dormitorio.

Los hallazgos de una in­vestigación del SWG Re­search Institute con sede en Trieste, publicado en enero, revelan que los grupos de­mográficos más vulnerables a los ideales neonazis son aquellos con edades com­prendidas entre los 25 y los 34 años, y que entre los ita­lianos en general, el 55 por ciento simpatiza con esas ideas políticas.

Los expertos citan muchas razones para la propagación del extremismo y las expre­siones racistas que hasta hace poco estaban relegadas a los márgenes de la sociedad. Incluyen una comprensión superficial de la historia, así como una economía debili­tada por una larga crisis que marginó a muchos trabaja­dores comunes y prohibió a muchos jóvenes ingresar en la fuerza de trabajo.

Más recientemente, existe la presión adicional de los inmigrantes que llegan desde el otro lado del Mediterrá­neo, con llegadas cercanas a los 120.000 el año pasado, y superando los 180.000 el año anterior.
