Alireza Karimi lideraba al ruso Alikhan Zhabrailov por un marcador de 3-2 en los cuartos de final de la categoría de 86 kilogramos en el Campeonato Mundial Sub-23 el pasado mes de noviembre.

“Karimi, por instrucciones de su entrenador Jamshidi, perdió deliberadamente su partido de cuartos de final contra Alikhan Zhabrailov“, dijo en un comunicado de la Organización Mundial de Lucha(UWW por sus siglas en inglés).
“Se descubrió que tanto el luchador como el entrenador actuaron en violación directa de las Reglas Internacionales de Lucha y las Regulaciones Disciplinarias de UWW”.
En la lucha libre, un competidor puede ganar en superioridad técnica logrando una ventaja de 10 puntos sobre su oponente. Karimi se dejó derribar por Zhabrailov y concedió repetidamente dos puntos mientras rodaba con las piernas apoyadas.
Karimi admitió que le habían dicho que perdiera poco después del partido, ya que un video se hizo viral en las redes sociales en Irán.
Zhabrailov ganó el campeonato, pero Karimi dijo que estaba seguro de ganar una medalla de oro y que las autoridades “minaron” su trabajo.
La lucha es muy popular en Irán y, en ese momento, el gobierno del país rindió homenaje a Karimi, lo felicitó por su “acción noble y heroica” y lo llamó “una fuente de orgullo y elogio”.
La sanción contra Karimi termina el 23 de mayo, aunque la suspensión sólo se aplica a partidos internacionales, dejándolo libre para luchar en el país.
Irán no reconoce el estado de Israel y prohíbe a sus atletas competir contra israelíes en eventos deportivos internacionales.
