El embajador de Israel en Turquía, Eitan Naeh, fue sometido a rigurosos controles de seguridad en Estambul, luego de que el gobierno turco le ordenara abandonar el país en medio de las crecientes tensiones con Israel.
El martes, el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores de Turquía anunció que expulsaba a Naeh, luego de condenar el uso de la fuerza de Israel para defender su frontera con Gaza, mientras decenas de miles de alborotadores intentaban violar la valla de seguridad.
Turquía luego ordenó que el cónsul general de Israel en Estambul, Yosef Levi Sfari abandonara el país temporalmente.
Antes de que Naeh abordara el avión de regreso a Israel en el aeropuerto Ataturk, los medios locales fueron invitados por el gobierno para fotografiar al embajador mientras era sometido a los controles de seguridad en lo que parece ser un intento deliberado de humillarlo.
En represalia, el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores de Israel invitó a la prensa cuando llamó al representante turco, Umut Deniz, a explicar el incidente y se le pidió que entregara su pasaporte.
En respuesta a la expulsión de Naeh, Israel también ordenó al cónsul general turco en Jerusalén, Husnu Gurcan Turkoglu, responsable de las relaciones de Turquía con los palestinos, que abandonara el país.
Las tensiones entre Ankara y Jerusalén se intensificaron luego de la inauguración de la embajada de Estados Unidos en Jerusalén, una medida a la que el gobierno turco se opuso firmemente. Turquía también criticó a Israel por el uso de la fuerza para evitar que los alborotadores se infiltraran en territorio israelí.
El presidente turco Recep Tayyip Erdogan, cuyo país acoge a varios líderes de Hamas que viven en el exilio, negó el martes que el grupo sea una organización terrorista y lo calificó como un “movimiento de resistencia”. “Recordatorio a Netanyahu: Hamás no es una organización terrorista y los palestinos no son terroristas. Es un movimiento de resistencia que defiende la patria palestina contra una potencia ocupante. El mundo se solidariza con el pueblo de Palestina contra sus opresores”, aseveró.
“Netanyahu es el primer ministro de un Estado apartheid que ha ocupado las tierras de un pueblo indefenso durante más de 60 años en violación de las resoluciones de la ONU. Tiene la sangre de los palestinos en sus manos y no puede encubrir los crímenes atacando a Turquía”, tuiteó Erdogan.
Por su parte, Netanyahu respondió más tarde diciendo: “Un hombre que envía miles de soldados turcos para mantener la ocupación del norte de Chipre e invade Siria no nos predicará cuando nos defendamos de un intento de infiltración de Hamas”.
