Una carta escrita por Albert Einstein el día que renunció a su ciudadanía alemana, después de darse cuenta de que no podía regresar debido al ascenso de los nazis, fue vendida en una subasta.
Einstein escribió esa carta el 28 de marzo de 1933 y fue vendida en más de 30 mil dólares (USD 30.250) en la Casa de Subastas Nate D. Sanders en Los Ángeles.
Además, una segunda carta del científico, escrita en 1938, en la que habla de ayudar a los refugiados judíos a escapar de la Alemania nazi, se vendió por (USD 31.250).
La carta de 1933 fue escrita con su esposa, Elsa, a su hermana Maja Winteler-Einstein sobre la situación calamitosa en Alemania, minutos antes de que atracaran en Amberes, Bélgica, donde Einstein renunció a su ciudadanía alemana.
En la carta de 1938, también dirigida a su hermana, Albert Einstein habla de ayudar a los judíos y otras personas perseguidas a huir de los países de Europa con poder alemán, incluido el uso de sus propios fondos para hacerlo.
