Robert Kennedy, también conocido como Bobby, fue asesinado el 6 de junio de 1968 por Sirhan Bishara, un jordano de 24 años con ascendencia palestina, en el medio de las celebraciones de su campaña en las primarias de California. ¿El motivo? Una de ellas defiende que se realizaron 13 disparos (en base a las grabaciones de audio), pero la pistola de Bishara solo tenía capacidad para ocho balas. Por ello se cree que hubo un segundo tirador.

La figura de Robert F. Kennedy había ido adquiriendo relevancia a medida que avanzaba la campaña. Aparte de formar parte de una saga familiar icónica en Estados Unidos y de ser senador por Nueva York, había ejercido de fiscal general, entre 1961 y 1963.
