La ensayista y poeta, nativa de Brooklyn, había contando que la educación judía la ayudó a motivar su activismo. Publicó ensayos y poemas sobre temas como el antisemitismo, la intersección del judaísmo, el género y la raza, y las relaciones entre judíos y afroamericanos. Participó activamente en la comunidad LGBT y escribió sobre su identidad como judía lesbiana. Como directora fundadora de JFREJ en 1990, luchó contra el racismo y la injusticia económica.
«Fue una brillante poetisa feminista, ensayista y activista lesbiana que luchó incansablemente contra el racismo y el antisemitismo. Despertó nuestra imaginación colectiva y radical y abrió nuestras mentes a una extensión de posibilidades», escribió JFREJ para despedirla.
Nació como Melanie Kaye y más tarde se agregó Kantrowitz en el apellido para honrar sus raíces judías.
