En estos días los judíos del mundo celebramos Sucot, una de las tres peregrinaciones en las que anualmente estaba pautado subir a Jerusalén. La palabra, en hebreo, significa cabañas, por las moradas temporales que los israelitas tuvieron como hogar hasta completar un trayecto corto, pero psicológicamente enorme: 40 años para dejar de pensar y actuar como esclavos. Este éxodo ocupa por sí solo uno de los cinco libros que son la esencia de nuestra fe, con lo que el periplo de su lectura también nos hace partícipes de las incomodidades del camino a la libertad.
Casualidades o no, el mismo desierto (para algunos, más bien un mar de dudas) que atravesamos entonces durante cuatro décadas, hace el mismo tiempo que ya no está bajo gobierno judío. El 17 de septiembre de 1978 se firmaba la paz de Israel con Egipto (no de manos de Moisés y Faraón, sino de sus descendientes Menachem Begin y Anwar Sadat), con lo que, en esta ocasión en particular, conmemoramos 40 años “en” el desierto y “sin” el desierto. En Israel, no obstante, quedan otros eriales que domesticar y reverdecer (el Neguev y la Aravá) y otros virtuales que atravesar, especialmente si recordamos peripecias como el odio y ataques de los amalequitas, la nación nómada con la que los israelitas tuvieron que compartir el Sinaí y de los que se dice que procedían también de la tribu de Abraham (a través de su nieto Esaú). La Torá nos ilustra gráficamente este enfrentamiento cuando en una batalla los israelitas consiguen resistir mientras Moisés aguante con los brazos en alto, pero son sus enemigos quienes progresarán en cuanto desfallezca y baje los brazos.
Esta metáfora conserva su fuerza miles de años después. Mientras el estado de Israel ha sido capaz de mantenerse con los brazos alzados, las otras naciones han sellado una paz (mejor, la no agresión), que no exige amor, pero sí respeto. Queda por delante un largo camino lleno de penurias, sacrificios e incomodidades que harán a más de uno añorar los plácidos tiempos de ser esclavos de las certidumbres ajenas. Antes de llegar a liberarnos del sometimiento y la violencia, nos quedan todavía muchos pasos que dar y cielos bajo los que cobijarnos en simples cabañas, pero con una certeza: cada vez estaremos más cerca. Ese objetivo es el arma más poderosa jamás inventada y la más temida por los faraones y quienes los consagran hasta nuestros días. Seguramente la memoria de ese camino es lo que nos ha permitido sobrevivir al desierto de dos mil años de destierro, a la vez que responder al misterio del odio que nos han profesado desde entonces los amalequitas dispersos por el mundo y al pánico de los poderosos a los anhelos de libertad de las gentes.
