Los líderes en el Reino Unido de una secta Jasídica judía han establecido que las mujeres de su comunidad no deben conducir porque va contra «las normas tradicionales de la modestia», según informa el semanario «The Jewish Chronicle».
El grupo judío Belz, que dirige dos escuelas en el norte de Londres, alertó por carta a los miembros de su comunidad de que los niños que lleguen al colegio en un vehículo conducido por sus madres tendrán vetada la entrada a sus centros a partir de agosto.
La misiva, firmada por los responsables de los centros educativos y un grupo de rabinos, subraya que cada vez hay «más madres de alumnos que han comenzado a conducir» y que eso ha creado «un gran resentimiento» en su comunidad.
Según los líderes británicos de la secta Jasídica, el dirigente de Belz en Israel, el rabino Yissachar Dov Rokeach, les ha urgido a prohibir la entrada a los
alumnos cuyas madres les lleven al colegio en coche.
La organización británica Neshei Belz, que agrupa a mujeres de esa comunidad, subrayó por su parte en un comunicado que se sienten «privilegiadas» por formar parte de un grupo en el que «se cumplen los máximos estándares de refinamiento, moralidad y dignidad».
«Creemos que conducir un vehículo es una actividad que somete a una gran presión y que podría comprometer nuestros valores. Nos expondría a las actitudes egoístas, mostrar rabia en la carretera, el lenguaje vulgar y otros comportamientos inapropiados», dice el comunicado.
Dina Brawer, portavoz en el Reino Unido de la Alianza Feminista de Judíos Ortodoxos, señaló por su parte que «el instinto que está detrás de esa prohibición draconiana es el del poder y el control de los hombres sobre las mujeres».
«En ese sentido, no es diferente a la prohibición de conducir a las mujeres en Arabia Saudita. Que se enmascare como un imperativo halájico (ley judía) es vergonzoso y perturbador», afirmó.
