La situación se intensificó en 2016 después de que la Autoridad Palestina y los estados árabes promovieran resoluciones en la Junta Ejecutiva de las Naciones Unidas que ignoraban los lazos judíos con el Monte del Templo y el Muro Occidental, y describían los lugares más sagrados del judaísmo únicamente por sus nombres musulmanes de al Haram al-Sharif y la plaza Buraq.
