El presidente israelí, Shimon Peres, se reunió con el candidato a la presidencia de Ucrania, Piotr Poroshenko, quien llegó en secreto a Israel para estudiar con las autoridades del país los efectos de la crisis en Crimea.
Según un comunicado oficial divulgado por la edición digital del diario «Yediot Aharonot», el encuentro tuvo lugar «días atrás» y al mismo también asistió el ministro israelí de Asuntos Exteriores, Avigdor Lieberman, quien apostó por una salida pacífica con Rusia.
«Espero que Rusia y Ucrania puedan normalizar sus relaciones pronto», afirmó Lieberman, quien opinó que un desenlace en este sentido es en interés tanto del mundo como de Israel.
«Ambos estados tienen unas amigables relaciones con Israel, y por ello deseamos que recuperen su colaboración lo antes posible. La normalización entre dos naciones fraternas, entre naciones vecinas, es nuestra prioridad», agregó.
Esta es la primera reacción oficial de Israel a la denominada crisis de Crimea, pese a que es uno de los temas más recurrentes de la prensa local.
El estado israelí observa con preocupación el futuro de la amplia comunidad judía que reside en Ucrania, al tiempo que teme molestar a Rusia, país con el que mantiene una compleja relación, ya que tras la caída del muro de Berlín, decenas de miles de ciudadanos judíos de la extinta URSS huyeron a Israel.
Según el rotativo, esta ambivalencia ha sido incluso censurada por Estados Unidos, crítico con la posición absentista de Israel frente a la resolución dictada por la ONU tras la decisión de Moscú de anexionarse Crimea.
«Yediot Aharonot» asegura que Israel también expresó su deseo de que las próximas elecciones en Ucrania, previstas para finales de mayo, «lleven la calma y una atmósfera civilizada» a la citada república.
Veintitrés candidatos han quedado registrados para concurrir a las elecciones presidenciales de Ucrania, y todas las encuestas señalan a Poroshenko, conocido como el «rey del chocolate» por sus empresas de dulces y bombones, como el favorito de los ucranianos.
La popularidad del empresario casi triplica a su más inmediata seguidora, Yulia Timoshenko.
