En un par de días, el 2 de noviembre, se cumplen 97 años de la Declaración Balfour, la carta que en el año 1917, dirigió Arthur James Balfour, entonces ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Gran Bretaña, a Lord Walter Rothschild, representante del Comité Político Sionista, anunciando la decisión del gobierno inglés de favorecer la instalación de un Hogar Nacional Judío en la zona denominada Palestina, es decir, el territorio original de Israel. La Declaración constituye el primer documento contemporáneo, a nivel oficial e internacional, que rescata el derecho del pueblo judío a restablecer su soberanía en dicho lugar.
Lamentablemente, pese al transcurrir del tiempo y a varios intentos de normalizar las relaciones en esa área geográfica, incluyendo acuerdos de paz con Egipto, Jordania, Marruecos, Túnez y la OLP, creando la Autoridad Nacional Palestina, no se ha avanzado más y en algunos aspectos vemos serios retrocesos en la ruta hacia el pleno reconocimiento de Israel. Por ejemplo, la ANP perdió el control de Gaza y allí gobierna un movimiento extremista, cuyo propósito es la destrucción del Estado judío. O, el mismo gobierno palestino dirigido por Mahmud Abbas, en vez de negociar con las autoridades israelíes, pretende saltarse esa difícil etapa con la alevosa intención de conseguir la titularidad de un Estado a través de una votación en la ONU.
Desde la gestación de Israel a principios del siglo pasado, éste se vio azotado por guerras y violencia ilimitada, cuya primordial causa se centra en la férrea negativa de los países árabes a convivir con uno judío, rechazando su legalidad. La hostilidad árabe contra los judíos se hace palpable de múltiples formas: con una estrategia diplomática y propagandística; en el comercio internacional con un boicot. Además, se cuentan las constantes amenazas de aniquilamiento, los movimientos que por su constitución llaman a la destrucción de Israel y los grupos radicales islámicos de distintas tendencias, los cuales usan el terrorismo contra objetivos israelíes y judíos alrededor del mundo.
Aun así, hay la esperanza que, en algún momento, los ciudadanos palestinos logren tener líderes que negocien un acuerdo de paz que permita la coexistencia armoniosa por el bienestar y progreso de los pueblos de la región.
