El jefe del Estado Mayor, teniente general Gadi Eizenkot, resolvió desbandar el batallón homogéneo druso del Ejército de Defensa de Israel (Tzáhal), que ya no alistará reclutas de esa comunidad y que parecía simbolizar una segregación que desde hace mucho tiempo ha pasado a la historia.
Eizenkot tomó la decisión a la luz del exitoso desempeño militar de los integrantes de la comunidad drusa y debido a “su deseo de continuar desarrollándose e integrándose en el ejército”, precisó un portavoz castrense.
El batallón, que había sido establecido en 1974, ya no recibirá más reclutas y será cerrado completamente en septiembre próximo.
La comunidad drusa en el país, que actualmente está constituida por 130 mil almas, firmó un pacto con el naciente Estado de Israel, en octubre de 1948, y comenzó a servir poco después en las filas del Ejército de Defensa de Israel. En 1956, a pedido de los líderes de la comunidad, el estado impuso el servicio militar obligatorio para los varones. El porcentaje de enrolamiento es del 80 por ciento, más alto que el promedio nacional.
Pocos querían servir en el Batallón 299 o el “Batallón de la espada (jerev)”. Según las estadísticas del ejército, solamente el 5 por ciento de los reclutas drusos pidieron servir en esta unidad, el año pasado; pero el 19 por ciento fueron obligados a enrolarse en ella.
“El Ejército de Defensa de Israel es un crisol de razas, y no hay ninguna razón para que exista un batallón druso o un batallón marroquí”, expresó el ex ministro druso Salah Tarif al diario Haaretz.
La unidad fue fundada cuando el idioma era un problema entre los reclutas drusos, cuya lengua materna es el árabe. Hoy en día, cuando el comandante de la prestigiosa Brigada Golani, coronel Ghassan Alian, es druso, al igual que el edecán del presidente, general Hasson Hasson, resulta un anacronismo la segregación de la unidad, que fue condecorada por su rol durante la Segunda Guerra del Líbano, en 2006.
Tras el anuncio, el ministro de Defensa, Moshé Yaalón, expresó que la medida “requiere de nosotros continuar actuando hacia la completa integración en la sociedad israelí, sin distinción de religión, raza, sexo o preferencia sexual, junto con una guerra sin cuartel contra el racismo”.
Yaalón expresó que el deseo de la comunidad drusa de escalar hacia los puestos más altos de comando dentro del ejército “es significativa y emana de una educación de amor a su patria y del liderazgo de los jefes de la comunidad”.
