Abdel Hay el Azab es consciente de la responsabilidad que recae sobre él. Rector de la Universidad Al Azhar, la institución más prestigiosa del mundo en el estudio del islam suní —fue fundada en El Cairo en el año 975—, pronuncia con cuidado milimétrico cada una de sus palabras y llega a repetir una frase si cree que un verbo es más preciso que otro. Tal es su celo para evitar malentendidos que no aceptó a ningún intérprete en su participación el pasado jueves en las jornadas sobre Diálogo Intercultural e Interreligioso, organizadas por el Ministerio de Exteriores en Barcelona. Solo admite como traductor a su ayudante personal —exclusivamente en francés— si el interlocutor no habla árabe.
– El Estado Islámico (EI) dice que sus actos responden al cumplimiento de los preceptos del Islam. ¿Usted que cree?
– Es necesario que la sociedad, musulmana y occidental, sepa diferenciar entre religión y grupos terroristas. El islam promueve el respeto hacia el otro, el principio de no agresión y la coexistencia pacífica. Los terroristas solo promueven el terror. Por eso, los musulmanes, pero también Europa, tienen la responsabilidad de corregir la visión errónea que existe sobre el islam y que difunden algunos medios.
– ¿A qué atribuye la expansión del EI?
– El EI [El Azab alude siempre al Estado Islámico con su acrónimo en árabe, daesh, para evitar concederle carácter estatal] no es producto de la religión, sino que es una fabricación política. ¿Puede un grupo, por sí mismo, destruir un Estado? Está claro que no. El EI sobrevive porque tiene apoyo político.
– ¿Quiénes lo apoyan?
– Verdaderamente tenemos que preguntarnos quiénes están sosteniendo al EI y de dónde sale el dinero para su financiación. Y yo les digo a las escuelas y a los países que están apoyando a estos terroristas que son injustos con su pueblo, que están promoviendo el terrorismo y que los injustos tendrán su sitio en el infierno.
– ¿Cómo combatir al EI?
– Contra el terrorismo, en la Universidad de Al Azhar proponemos el Corán, el islam verdadero, para difundir la paz.
– En diciembre de 2013, el Gobierno egipcio designó oficialmente a los Hermanos Musulmanes como terroristas. ¿Usted los considera terroristas?
– Creo que todo aquel que comete crímenes y actúa en contra de la ley es igual al EI. ¿Acaso los Hermanos Musulmanes han denunciado los crímenes cometidos por grupos terroristas? No, no lo han hecho. Son una organización que instiga a actuar en contra de la población.
– Expulsó a miembros de los Hermanos Musulmanes de la universidad.
– Expulsé para siempre a aquellos que habían cometido crímenes o habían incitado a la violencia, no por el hecho de ser de los Hermanos Musulmanes. Pero ahora hemos logrado que impere la ley y la independencia de la justicia. Se ha liberado Egipto de grupos extremistas y es mi responsabilidad contribuir a la estabilidad.
– ¿Tras el golpe de Estado?
– El 30 de junio de 2013 hubo una revolución heroica que trajo a Egipto seguridad, estabilidad y libertad. Se aprobó una Constitución y se celebraron elecciones.
