Momentáneamente conmovida por la soledad de esas víctimas (luego, claro, la tragedia chechena pasó a segundo plano en mi cabeza, como nos ocurre a todos: la memoria es débil, la conciencia fluctuante), escribí un par de artículos sobre el tema, moví un manifiesto, acudí a manifestaciones ante la embajada rusa. En la primera se me acercó un chico rubio con barba para darme las gracias «por denunciar la masacre de nuestra gente, la muerte de nuestros niños». Tenía los ojos llenos de lágrimas y me conmovió. Intenté darle un par de besos en las mejillas y el hombre pegó un respingo y saltó hacia atrás: su religión le prohibía tocar a una mujer. Yo me reí de su santurronería, le dije alguna broma y dejé la cosa ahí.
Volví a encontrármelo un par de veces. Siempre se retorcía para no rozarme y a mí me parecían ridículos sus tontos aspavientos. Me enteré de que era español, hijo, si no recuerdo mal, de un militar, y que se había convertido al islamismo unos años antes. Luego lo más álgido de la crisis chechena pasó y ya no coincidimos. La siguiente vez que vi su cara fue en una foto en los periódicos en 2004: era uno de los islamistas detenidos en la segunda o tercera ola de redadas tras la masacre del 11-M. No estuvo incluido en el macrojuicio y no sé bien qué fue de él, pero desde luego era un fundamentalista y al parecer había estado en los campos yihadistas de Afganistán. Me quedé helada, y no sólo por él, sino por mí, por mi comportamiento tan permisivo ante su negativa a tocarme. Por tomarme a broma esa estruendosa señal de intolerancia. Si, en vez de hacer sus pamemas misóginas, hubiera levantado el brazo en el saludo nazi, yo lo habría condenado inmediatamente y lo hubiera considerado un enemigo de la democracia. Su radicalidad machista, en cambio, se la perdoné con una risa, sin darme cuenta de que era una señal igual o más peligrosa que la cruz gamada.
Todo esto viene a cuentos de los turbios, inquietantes, aterradores actos de violencia sexista cometidos en fin de año en la estación de Colonia y en varias ciudades europeas más. Desde el principio ha sido una noticia muy confusa. De entrada, tardó un par de días en aparecer en la prensa. Después, no hay fotos de los asaltos, o al menos no se ha visto ninguna. Cosa rara en estos tiempos de teléfonos móviles e imágenes ubicuas. Toda esa oscuridad suscita dudas; de hecho, al principio pensé que podría ser una campaña de intoxicación para justificar la represión. Que quizá las agresiones estuvieran magnificadas. Pero no, con el tiempo más bien se diría que lo que ha sucedido es lo contrario: que las agresiones se han querido tapar o minimizar (¿y las fotos se han ocultado?) para no agitar la bicha racista. Sólo en Alemania hay más de mil denuncias; y las agresiones sucedieron sincronizadamente en varias ciudades alemanas y en Austria, Suiza, Suecia y Finlandia. Sin duda hubo detrás una consigna, un acuerdo, un plan. Puede que ese plan esté pagado o infiltrado por la extrema derecha y que usen el sexismo criminal de los integristas para potenciar la xenofobia. Pero de lo que no cabe duda es de que el integrismo islámico está ahí y es un peligro no sólo para las mujeres, sino para toda la sociedad, al igual que los remilgos de aquel rubio converso hubieran debido ser un aviso para mí de su potencial dañino.
La socióloga argelina Marieme Hélie-Lucas ha escrito un formidable artículo sobre el tema en la revista Sinpermiso. Explica que este comportamiento tiene antecedentes: durante la primavera árabe, tanto en Túnez como en la plaza de Tahrir de El Cairo, las mujeres manifestantes fueron atacadas por integristas, desnudadas, manoseadas, golpeadas y alguna incluso violada ante la pasividad de la policía. Sostiene Hélie-Lucas que esto es un desafío, una escalada de los fundamentalistas en Europa; que la izquierda no responde, sacrificando una vez más los derechos de la mujer ante supuestos valores superiores, como la protección de las minorías oprimidas. Pero al hacer dejación de la defensa de los valores democráticos esenciales, dice con toda razón Hélie-Lucas, lo que hace la izquierda es potenciar a la extrema derecha xenófoba. En efecto: ¡qué vergüenza esa alcaldesa de Colonia que dice a las mujeres que no provoquen! Si la izquierda no asume con todas sus consecuencias la lucha contra el integrismo islámico, en Europa terminarán ganando los fascismos.
