La primera vez que fui a un cementerio ya era un adolescente. Mi primer asombro en la ceremonia fue cuando el rabino, a la vez que rezaba sus oraciones, iba realizándonos un corte en nuestras vestimentas, lo que ha pasado al español con la expresión “rasgarse las vestiduras”, vigente más de cinco siglos después de que los judíos fueran expulsados de España. Mucho después, todas las emisoras del país emitían el tema estrella del disco flamenco más vendido de la historia, en el que Camarón de la Isla declaraba: “soy gitano y vengo a tu casamiento, a partirme la camisa”. Desde entonces soy un convencido de las concomitancias entre lo judío y lo gitano. Aunque las fechas de partida y de llegada de unos y otros no coincidan, la expresión del máximo dolor (en el caso de la canción, por desamor al casarse con otro) con la rotura de la vestimenta no me parece casual.
Hoy, como tantos millones que admiraron su obra, quiero rasgar al menos las palabras con que me envuelvo semanalmente para despedir a Shimon Peres. Tuve la oportunidad de verlo, siempre a cierta distancia, en varias ocasiones. A diferencia de tantas figuras israelíes, no irradiaba fuerza o carisma, sino sabiduría cercana, nada pretenciosa. Hombre de paz hasta en la forma de expresarse, fue capaz de transformar a dos generales míticos y “halcones” como Rabin y Sharon en esperanza de los sectores más dialogantes (el primero con las negociaciones de Oslo, el segundo con la retirada unilateral de Gaza).
Hoy, venerado y honrado en su sepelio por los máximos líderes mundiales, Israel despide a quien le negó en varias ocasiones el cetro del gobierno y a quien seguramente más les aportó como jefe de estado, más allá de la política, a contracorriente de las señas de identidad nacional más arraigadas: el hombre que más hizo por la seguridad del país sin servir en el ejército y más ejercitó el músculo de las negociaciones de paz, el representante del “judío nuevo” que nunca perdió su acento diaspórico, el que soñó más lejos en el tiempo con una Israel próspera y basada en el conocimiento y el emprendimiento.
A la luz de la actualidad que vivimos en España, por último, quisiera recordar a quien, tras las elecciones de 1984, fue el primero en leer los resultados que imposibilitaban la gobernabilidad y en explicar a su electorado por qué tenían que coaligarse justamente con su enemigo político frontal, ofreciendo un pacto de gobierno rotativo de unidad. Ello les permitió, entre otros logros – ya nacionales, no partidistas – cambiar el modelo económico del país de la agricultura al conocimiento, sacudir el sistema educativo y sentar las bases de la pujanza del Israel de hoy. El mismo país que, unido al resto del pueblo judío, se rasga hoy las vestiduras de dolor, pero también de orgullo.
