Renee Rabinowitz dice que se sintió «humillada».
La mujer de 81 años, una sobreviviente del Holocausto, estaba volando de Newark, Estados Unidos, a Tel Aviv, Israel, cuando los empleados de la aerolínea El Al le pidieron que cambiara de asiento.
La razón: la objeción de un hombre judío ultraortodoxo a viajar al lado de una mujer.
«Pensé para mí misma: ‘Aquí estoy, una mujer mayor, educada, he estado alrededor del mundo y un tipo puede decidir que no debo sentarme a su lado, ¿por qué?'», dijo en una entrevista con The New York Times.
Por este caso, ocurrido en 2015, un tribunal de Israel acaba de emitir una sentencia en la que le prohíbe a El Al solicitarles a las mujeres que cambien de asiento si un hombre lo pide por sus creencias religiosas.
La Corte de Magistrados de Jerusalén dijo que tales solicitudes van en contra las leyes contra la discriminación.
Pero la sentencia solo vino después de que Rabinowitz presentó una demanda de daños en contra la compañía aérea.
El Al asegura que nunca presiona a los pasajeros para que intercambien su asiento y que se opone a cualquier forma de discriminación, según reportó el diario The Times of Israel.
Pero el tribunal le ordenó que informe a todo su personal que estas peticiones, por el simple hecho de que las haga un hombre, son ilegales.
Evitar el contacto
Muchos hombres judíos ultraortodoxos evitan las situaciones en las que se pueda dar un toque accidental con mujeres que no son sus esposas.
El concepto de la ley judía, conocido como negiah, tiene como fin evitar el contacto con una persona del sexo opuesto, a menos de que sea un familiar directo, para no generar cualquier atractivo extramarital.
El grupo de derechos civiles israelí Centro de Acción Religiosa representaba a Rabinowitz en el caso.
Sostuvo que la decisión del tribunal es una «gran victoria» en una «larga lucha contra la segregación de género en el ámbito público».
El caso ha generado debate sobre las estrictas normas judías que algunos siguen.
De acuerdo con el diario The Jerusalem Post, estas peticiones de cambios de asiento han estado causando peleas y retrasos durante años «debido a la negativa de estos hombres a tomar sus asientos antes de despegar».
El fallo otorgó a Rabinowitz una compensación por una cantidad equivalente a US$1.800.
«Estoy muy contenta porque la juez entendió el tema», dijo la mujer al diario The New York Times.
«Comprendió que no es una cuestión de dinero, pues era una suma pequeña. Se dio cuenta que es una cuestión de que El Al cambie su política, y esa es la orden que ha recibido», celebró.

Creo que la solución de este problema, estaría, en la persona encargada de emitir los pasajes, al no asignarle, a un ultraortodoxo, un asiento junto a una mujér.
Cuando vine de Israel hacia Buenos Aires, pude ver algunas actitudes de incomodidad de los judíos ortodoxos que viajaban el el…solo por enfrentarse en el pasillo para ir al baño, creo que este tipo de pensamiento no debería existir no solo en esta religión, sino en todas….las absolutistas.
