El movimiento rabínico conservador en Estados Unidos, reitera la prohibición de las bodas interreligiosas, pero insta sinceramente a la bienvenida a los cónyuges no judíos.
Esto fue establecido según una nueva carta firmada por los cuatro líderes del movimiento.
La carta, publicada esta semana y dirigida al clero, educadores y líderes del movimiento, responde a una tendencia en la que algunos prominentes rabinos conservadores anunciaron que comenzarían a oficiar entre matrimonios mixtos. “Afirmamos la práctica tradicional de reservar los oficios rabínicos de casamiento a dos judíos”, dice la carta, y agrega que los líderes del movimiento “son igualmente firmes en que nuestro clero y las comunidades se esfuerzan por crear múltiples oportunidades para relaciones profundas y solidarias entre la pareja y el rabino, la pareja y la comunidad, todo en el contexto de la bienvenida y el amor que se extiende mucho antes del momento de la boda y mucho más allá también”.
La carta fue escrita por el rabino Bradley Artson, decano de la Escuela Ziegler de Estudios Rabínicos en Los Ángeles, y fue co-firmada por Arnold Eisen, el decano del Jewish Theological Seminary; Rabbi Julie Schonfeld, directora ejecutiva del Conservative Rabbinical Seminary; y el rabino Steven Wernick, director ejecutivo de la Sinagoga Unida del Judaísmo Conservador.
Desde el año 2000, más del 70 por ciento de los judíos no ortodoxos se han casado con parejas no judías, según el estudio del 2013 de Pew Research Center sobre la judería estadounidense. Las otras principales confesiones judías en los Estados Unidos están divididas en el tema: el movimiento de la Reforma permite matrimonios mixtos y los ortodoxos lo prohíben.
El judaísmo conservador apunta a mantener la lealtad a la ley tradicional judía, a la vez que sigue siendo relevante para el mundo moderno. A sus rabinos se les prohíbe oficiar o asistir a matrimonios mixtos, pero recientemente el movimiento ha tomado medidas para dar la bienvenida a las parejas casadas antes y después de la boda. Este año, las sinagogas del movimiento votaron para permitir a los no judíos como miembros.
Pero varios de los rabinos del movimiento han comenzado a oficiar bodas entre matrimonios, argumentando que el movimiento no ha ido lo suficientemente lejos para abrazar a los esposos/as de muchos jóvenes judíos. El pasado mes de diciembre, el rabino Seymour Rosenbloom de Filadelfia fue expulsado del grupo paraguas de la Asamblea Rabínica por realizar bodas interreligiosas. En junio, el clero ordenado por los conservadores en B’nai Jeshurun, una sinagoga neoyorquina influyente y sin denominación, anunció que comenzarían a realizar matrimonios mixtos. Lo mismo hizo el rabino Amichai Lau-Lavie, que dirige la congregación experimental Lab / Shul en Nueva York.
Los líderes conservadores respondieron en ese momento al reafirmar su oposición al matrimonio mixto al tiempo que se comprometían a respetar y dar la bienvenida a las parejas casadas.
“Creemos -y los datos lo confirman- que, con mucho, el camino más efectivo para construir un futuro judío es fortalecer la identidad judía, comenzando con la familia judía”, reza un comunicado del Seminario Teológico Judío.
