El parlamento iraquí aprobó una ley que prohíbe a la población ondear la bandera israelí, luego de que la enseña se convirtiera en un símbolo frecuente en los mítines a favor de la independencia del Kurdistán.
La decisión se tomó luego de que el primer ministro de Israel, Benjamín Netanyahu, fuera el único líder de la región que expresó públicamente su apoyo a la independencia de Kurdistán, y su foto también ha aparecido en los mítines kurdos.
El clérigo chií Ammar al Hakim, líder del Bloque Al Muatin, impulsó en el parlamento iraquí la ley aprobada en la cámara legislativa. El texto criminaliza el uso de la bandera de “la entidad sionista” en lugares públicos.
Israel es el único país que apoyó la celebración del referéndum de independencia del Kurdistán, considerado ilegal por el gobierno central de Bagdad. El apoyo el Estado judío llevó a numerosos ciudadanos kurdos a izar la bandera de Israel durante la celebración de los resultados de esa consulta.
El presidente del Kurdistán iraquí, Masud Barzani, anunció que no permanecerá en el cargo más allá del 1 de noviembre de 2017 y denunció la campaña militar de las fuerzas iraquíes en los territorios disputados con las tropas kurdas, en medio de negociaciones para resolver la disputa.
Barzani envió una carta al Parlamento para comunicar su renuncia y ofreció posteriormente un discurso televisado, asegurando que se retira del cargo que ocupa desde 2005 pero que seguirá sirviendo al Kurdistán como un soldado “peshmerga”.
