Científicos israelíes han develado un sistema genético mediante el cual se puede determinar el sexo de la descendencia en los mamíferos. El descubrimiento podría tener implicaciones significativas para la industria agrícola.

El profesor Udi Qimron, el Dr. Ido Yosef y la Dra. Motti Gerlic del departamento de Microbiología Clínica e Inmunología de la Escuela de Medicina Sackler de la Universidad de Tel Aviv, preocupados por los millones de pollos machos que mueren en la industria avícola cada año, condujeron un estudio dirigido a cambiar la proporción de sexos en una progenie. Encontraron una capacidad genética en los mamíferos que solo produce hembras y un sistema similar que sólo produce machos.

El estudio titulado «Un sistema genético para sesgar la proporción de sexos en ratones» fue publicado el lunes en Embo Reports, una revista científica especializada en biología molecular. La investigación se realizó durante año y medio utilizando modelos de ratones y resultó en una proporción de 95 hembras/ 5 machos. El profesor Qimron ha señalado que este es el primer ejemplo mundial de sesgo sexual mediante procesos genéticos en mamíferos.

El profesor Qimron explicó: «Abordamos este problema de manera innovadora, utilizando ingeniería genética». En el Departamento de Microbiología Clínica e Inmunología los investigadores Liat Edry-Botzer, Rea Globus, Inbar Shlomovitz y Ariel Munitz cruzaron ratones genéticamente modificados. El esperma de los machos fue manipulado para ser «medio tóxico», mientras los óvulos de las hembras tenían la otra mitad de la toxina. La toxina puede ser activada durante la fertilización. Si el espermatozoide lleva un cromosoma Y, que produciría un macho, la toxina se activa y el óvulo es exterminado en el útero. Si el espermatozoide lleva un cromosoma X, que produciría una hembra, entonces la toxina no se activa y el óvulo se desarrolla normalmente. Un sistema similar produciría solo machos.

Qimron agregó que estos resultados allanan el camino para un sistema genético que permite una producción sexual sesgada, de la que pueden beneficiarse los productores de ganado vacuno, cerdos y pollos. Sin embargo, los mayores desafíos que enfrenta la implantación de estos sistemas es el proceso de aprobación por los agentes reguladores de organismos modificados genéticamente.
