Cuando Jenna Liszt, una joven judía de Colorado, llegó a Israel por primera vez en su vida en el 2013 como parte del proyecto Taglit Birthright, esperaba hacer nuevos amigos y conectarse con sus raíces. Nunca se imaginó que encontraría al amor de su vida. Pero en el avión, regresando de Tel Aviv, otro integrante del grupo llamado Brayden le ofreció un asiento en la ventana, y el resto fue historia: «La verdad es que nunca pensé que encontrar una relación un judío fuera tan importante», señaló Jenna. «Cuando pensaba en el futuro, asumía que siempre podía ir a una sinagoga o celebrar las festividades incluso con un cónyuge no judío», recordó.
Finalmente, Brayden y Jenna se casaron en agosto de 2016, y dos años después nació su hija Kaya. «Estoy esperando que sea lo suficientemente grande como para llevarla con nosotros a un viaje familiar en Israel», señaló la mamá.
El proyecto «Birthright», que celebra su vigésimo aniversario, presenta una oportunidad única para que jóvenes judíos de todo el mundo se conozcan con otros. Algunos provienen de lugares donde hay muy pocos, por lo que este viaje se ha transformado en una gran «fábrica de parejas». Algunos se enamoran en el vuelo de ida, otros durante el recorrido, o como en el caso de Jenna y Brayden, una vez que están volviendo a casa.
El programa está disponible para todos los jóvenes judíos entre los 18 y los 26 años, con el colegio secundario finalizado, y que no hayan viajado a Israel anteriormente por algún plan educativo grupal. Los solicitantes también deben tener al menos un abuelo judío o haber completado una conversión.
Según los datos de «Birthright», no menos del 20% de los graduados del programa están casados con otros graduados. Asimismo, el 80% de quienes participaron en el programa, eligen criar a sus hijos como judíos, en comparación con el 60% de los que no lo hicieron.
«Cuando hice el viaje, me enamoré dos veces: de Nicole y de Israel», señaló Daniel, de Rio de Janeiro. Nicole, su esposa, destacó que vivían uno al lado del otro en Brasil, pero nunca se habían conocido previo al viaje.
«Birthright es hoy el puente principal que conecta a estos jóvenes judíos entre sí, y también con los israelíes», explicó su CEO, Gidi Mark. «No dejamos de sorprendernos por los miles que han encontrado el amor gracias a nosotros, sin mencionar el nuevo amor por el Estado de Israel».
