«La Federación de Fútbol de la República Islámica recibió una carta oficial de la AFC que decía que había decidido celebrar el futuro Campeonato Asiático de la Liga de Fútbol organizado por Irán en países ‘neutrales'», dijo la agencia de noticias Tasnim del Cuerpo de Guardias de la Revolución Islámica (IRGC) reportado el viernes 17 de enero.
Amirmahdi Alavi, portavoz de la IFF, rechazó la prohibición y dijo a los medios locales que «Irán está totalmente listo para recibir a varios equipos, como lo ha demostrado repetidamente durante los últimos años».
Señaló la final de la ACL de 2018 celebrada en Teherán y dijo: «El ministro de deportes le ha dado a la AFC las garantías de seguridad necesarias con respecto a los equipos anfitriones».
La IFF aún no ha especificado por qué recibió la prohibición de la AFC, o si la decisión tiene alguna relación con el reciente derribo accidental de un avión de pasajeros de Ukraine Airlines por parte de las fuerzas iraníes que mataron a los 176 pasajeros a bordo de la capital, Teherán.
