El corazón de la Biblia judía es el Pentateuco y, dentro de él, la mayor parte del Libro está consagrado a la figura de Moisés y su gesta. Cinematográficamente, su retrato se suele centrar en los primeros compases de su leyenda (nacimiento, juventud, los mensajes divinos y la salida de Egipto), pero la trascendencia de su labor posterior, liderando a esclavos liberados para confirmar un único pueblo, es mucho mayor. Aunque muchos pongan en duda la historicidad del relato, lo importante es que durante miles de años ha servido de cemento de una identidad más allá de la religión y, por supuesto, de cualquier consideración “racial”. Como el mítico Hércules de la tradición clásica, el rescatado del Nilo se ve obligado a cumplir con una serie de “trabajos”: asegurar el respeto a los Mandamientos, no dejar que la grey caiga en la idolatría, lograr la fusión de los clanes, familias o tribus en un mismo espíritu nacional, labores para las cuales necesita un par de generaciones, antes de llevarles al destino prometido.

Como entonces, y en cada generación, el pueblo de Israel, los descendientes de los hijos de Jacob, han necesitado un Moisés que los guiase, aunque en muchos casos no conocían el camino y nos condujeron a despeñaderos. En otros, fueron muchos los líderes que tiraron del carro en la misma dirección y consiguieron desenterrar las ruedas y hacerlo avanzar, como sucedió con el sionismo y el renacimiento de un estado judío. Incluso desde la distancia física, escritores como el estadounidense Howard Fast se unieron a la emoción de un país propio novelando el pasado macabeo en “Mis gloriosos hermanos”; el mismo autor de “Espartaco” que llevaría al cine poco después el recientemente fallecido Kirk Douglas. Parafraseando su escena más recordada desde entonces somos muchos los que nos vemos impulsados a ponernos de pie y proclamar “Yo soy Israel” cada vez que vuelve a amenazarse su existencia o ponerse en duda su legitimidad.

En la tradición judía hay varios inicios de año: el del comienzo del mundo (Rosh Hashaná), el de la naturaleza (en estos días, Tu Bishvat) y el del inicio de Israel como pueblo (en Pésaj). Si bien hace mucho que Moisés no está entre nosotros, su mensaje de unidad de destino sigue vigente. No somos la suma, sino las partes de uno. Siempre estaremos a 40 años del lugar al que queremos llegar. Quizás sea ese el tiempo que aún nos quede hasta vivir en paz con nuestros vecinos o, mejor, que estos estén dispuestos a vernos como tales.

Muchos quizás no lleguemos a verlo, puede porque aún nos sintamos esclavos de ideologías y prejuicios acumulados en nuestros “egiptos” particulares. Pero seguimos con el trabajo hercúleo de encaminarnos hacia ese futuro prometido.
