El mandatario de Israel le envió una carta a su homólogo peruano para que libere a Hodaya Monsongo, una joven de 24 años con una enfermedad mental que está presa en el país americano.
El presidente Reuven Rivlin le ha escrito a su homólogo peruano, Martín Alberto Vizcarra Cornejo, con una solicitud para que indulte a Hodaya Monsongo, quien ha estado bajo arresto en Perú durante varios meses.
Hodaya, que tiene 24 años y tiene problemas de salud mental, fue arrestada hace unos seis meses bajo sospecha de contrabando de drogas.

En su camino de regreso a Israel, la seguridad detuvo a Hodaya para registrar su equipaje y, según los informes, encontró sustancias ilegales. Los miembros de la familia afirmaron que no tenía capacidad para obtener o contrabandear tales sustancias, y que, al ser un blanco fácil debido a su discapacidad, fue acusada injustamente.
La policía arrestó a Hodaya y actualmente está detenida en una prisión peruana. Las personas cercanas a ella aseguran que se encuentra aterrorizada y no comprende dónde está, ni por qué. La organización Jabad-Lubavitch de Lima ha estado haciendo entregas regulares de comida kosher a su celda.
En su carta, el presidente escribió que Hodaya sufre problemas médicos y ha sido diagnosticada con una capacidad cognitiva limitada, por lo que su juicio se ve afectado.
Además, mencionó que ella no tiene antecedentes penales previos y que es razonable creer que su condición única, como la describe él en su carta, la llevó a involucrarse en el supuesto asunto sin intención.
El presidente solicitó que las autoridades tomaran en cuenta su frágil condición y agregó que Hodaya solo habla hebreo, lo que ha vuelto muy difícil el hecho de comunicarse con los abogados locales.
«Teniendo en cuenta estas severas circunstancias humanitarias, estamos profundamente preocupados por la seguridad mental y física de Hodaya, especialmente a la luz de su prolongada detención y la distancia de su familia», enfatizó el presidente en su carta, y agregó, «le solicito su intervención personal para que le brinde un indulto a la Sra. Hodaya Monsongo».
Hace poco más de una semana, Naama Issachar, una joven israelí que permaneció más de nueve meses presa en una prisión rusa por un cargo similar, fue liberada luego de los esfuerzos del gobierno para que el presidente Vladimir Putin le otorgara el perdón necesario.
