Si la actual pandemia del COVID-19 (familiarmente, coronavirus) se hubiera desatado hace siete años, coincidiendo con el invierno en que según los textos mayas se acababa el mundo, posiblemente el miedo irracional a una plaga divina hubiera disparado el pánico, aumentado la presencia de charlatanes en los medios e impulsado la producción de telefilmes catastróficos.
Porque todavía nos resistimos a admitir la ausencia de intencionalidad en sucesos tan normales y ajenos a nuestras acciones como la mutación de los virus, los terremotos o las manchas solares. Todo aquello que altere nuestra forma de entender la vida sólo cabe explicarse como algo sobrenatural, expresión de enfado divino por apartarnos del camino trazado, tal como lo describiera el correspondiente profeta o intérprete de una voluntad superior sólo al alcance de selectos iluminados.
Desgraciadamente y para enfado del mismísimo Einstein, Dios parece un ludópata: desde el azar que domina la estructura misma del universo y que apenas vislumbramos estadísticamente a través de la mecánica cuántica, al caos con que organiza el mundo material. Buscar el orden y la lógica es una meta filosóficamente absurda desde su propio planteamiento, pero también la única estrategia eficaz para sobrevivir, como ha demostrado la especie del Homo Sapiens que, como plantea Yuval Noah Harari, pretende convertirse ella misma en la divinidad imaginada, a golpe de usar los vientos que soplan como mero resultado de la complejidad barométrica para llevarnos a un destino elegido: ¿qué otro conjunto de átomos decide en qué quiere convertirse cuando sea grande?
Eso sí: el viento no sopla nunca de forma uniforme ni en la misma dirección por mucho tiempo, lo que nos lleva a visitar parajes no programados, experiencias fuera de los manuales, “vivencias para las que no estábamos preparados” (o sea, la vida). ¿Cómo prepararse para lo inesperado sin siquiera saber a qué nos enfrentamos? Hoy la plaga ya tiene nombre, foto y constantes vitales (como su velocidad de contagio, índice de mortalidad, etc.) y nosotros la misma estrategia para combatirla que a la bíblica lepra y la medieval peste: barreras físicas e indumentarias para no compartir el mismo aire y espacio.
Si estuviéramos cerca de Pésaj, podríamos usar sin duda metáforas de las plagas que asolaron el Egipto de Faraón por su rechazo a liberar a los israelitas. Pero nos toca compartir el tiempo de esta epidemia con los preámbulos de Purím, cuando una plaga muy distinta, la del “sesgo cognitivo” del odio a los judíos lleva a plantear al visir Hamán una “solución” a la plaga social con que se nos describe: el aislamiento físico definitivo, la aniquilación. Desgraciadamente, hemos tenido que aprender a convivir con esta peste del odio y sus innumerables mutaciones, como tendremos que acostumbrarnos todos los humanos a hacerlo con lo que desconocemos.
