Netanyahu, un político de raza, ha sabido sortear los demoledores ataques recibidos, internos y externos, convenciendo a los electores que su equipo, su línea-fuerza y sus convicciones son las mejores opciones para la delicada situación actual de Israel.

Netanyahu demuestra poseer una muñeca política excepcional en aspectos fundamentales de la sociedad israelí: por una parte la concientización de que la seguridad de la población es vital para vivir en una democracia (única del Medio Oriente) rodeada de enemigos, con varios de ellos inmersos en sangrientas guerras civiles que podrían afectarla, y una macroeconomía (con un Producto per cápita de u$s 40.000.- anuales) que se comporta mejor que la de muchos de los cercanos países europeos del Primer Mundo. Netaniahu sabe que debe aprovechar este nuevo mandato para bajar a la microeconomía y morigerar varios de los problemas sociales como la existencia de algunos “guetos” de pobreza y el alto costo de las viviendas.

¿Quién es Benjamín Netanyahu?

Bibi, como lo llaman en Israel, fue el Primer Ministro más joven de la historia de Israel entre 1996 y 1999 y ahora logra convertirse en el Jefe de Gobierno que más tiempo habrá de ejercer el poder con su cuarta victoria electoral consecutiva desde 2009, superando a Ben Gurión, el creador del Estado de Israel en 1948.

Hijo del conocido historiador Benzion Netanyahu y nieto de un Rabino, Netaniahu nació en Tel Aviv (1949) por lo que resulta ser el segundo sabra (nacido en Israel) en ser Premier de su país luego del que fuera el primero, Itzjak Rabín z”l (nacido en Jerusalem).

Durante varios años vivió y estudió en Estados Unidos volviendo a Israel a los 17 años para alistarse en el Ejército israelí durante cinco años donde llegó a ser Comandante de una de las unidades de la Sayeret Matkal, la fuerza de elite del Ejército, participando en la “Guerra de los Seis Días (1967).

En 1972 vuelve a EE.UU. para iniciar la carrera de Arquitectura en el MIT (Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts) que interrumpió en Octubre de 1973 a fin de combatir en la “Guerra de Iom Kipur”, realizando operaciones de comando durante más de cuarenta días.

Después de la guerra volvió a los EE.UU. para completar sus estudios de Arquitectura a la que le sumó el título de Ciencias Políticas, graduándose en 1977 en la Universidad de Harvard.

En 1976 sufrió la pérdida de su hermano mayor Jonatan, Comandante de la Sayeret Matkal, quien resultó ser el único muerto durante la operación de rescate de los más de un centenar de secuestrados judíos en el Aeropuerto de Entebbe (Uganda) por un comando palestino apoyados por el Dictador africano Idi Amín. Esta tragedia personal lo marcó definitivamente en su lucha contra el terrorismo palestino en especial y el islamismo en general.

Como Director del Jonathan Netanyahu Anti-Terror Institute conoció a Moshe Arens, Embajador de Israel en Washington, quien decidió ser su padrino político llevándolo como asesor y mano derecha, llamando la atención de los líderes del Likud, Menajem Beiguin e Ytzjak Shamir que más adelante lo designó Embajador ante la ONU (1984-1988).

Como Embajador en la Naciones Unidas Netanyahu realizó una tarea excepcional siendo recordado siempre como un fiel continuador de quien fuera ese brillante Embajador anterior, Abba Eban, que acostumbraba a deslumbrar con su oratoria a todo el auditorio de la Asamblea General de la ONU, incluso a los propios representantes de los países enemigos de Israel.

Acompañó al Premier Itzjak Shamir a la Conferencia de Paz de Madrid para Medio Oriente en 1991 donde se ubicó entre los más exigentes de la delegación israelí tratando de frenar la vuelta de Arafat y sus secuaces al campo político, quienes luego de la Guerra del Líbano de 1982, en la que fueran expulsados de Beirut, se encontraban exiliados y acabados en Túnez.

En 1993 se opuso rotundamente a los Acuerdos de Oslo firmados por el entonces Premier Itzjak Rabín junto con Shimon Peres y Yasir Arafat, alegando que se estaba cometiendo un error descomunal desde el inicio mismo del acuerdo al denominarlo “Gaza y Jericó primero”, sin determinar exactamente su continuidad y finalización de las peticiones y exigencias posteriores que pudieran surgir de la parte palestina, de los territorios no mencionados con claridad en dicho Tratado. En 1996, una vez convertido en el líder del Partido Likud, es elegido como Primer Ministro, cargo que ocupa hasta 1999.

Con el posterior Gobierno del General Sharón participó activamente, primero como Ministro de Exteriores y luego como Ministro de Finanzas donde, en este último, realizó una tarea transformadora fundamental fortaleciendo la macroeconomía y las finanzas del país.

Cuando en 2004 el gabinete resuelve la retirada israelí unilateral de la Franja de Gaza Netanyahu rompe con Ariel Sharón por no estar de acuerdo con dicha decisión.

En 2009 Netanyahu es nuevamente elegido como Primer Ministro recibiendo un país con enormes problemas que el reelecto Premier deberá seguir resolviendo: Gaza, incautada por Hamas dispara misiles a los civiles israelíes; Irán desarrolla sin pausa su proyecto misilístico nuclear; una crisis económica global producto del Corona-virus y un sangriento Medio Oriente derivado de la ilusoria “Primavera Árabe”.
