Un tribunal denegó hoy la petición del primer ministro, Benjamín Netanyahu, de no atender personalmente a la primera sesión del juicio por corrupción que debe enfrentar a partir del domingo.
El Tribunal de Distrito de Jerusalén aseguró que la asistencia del jefe de Gobierno, acusado de cohecho, fraude y abuso de confianza en tres casos distintos, es algo requerido para cualquier encausado durante la apertura de un proceso judicial, por lo que Netanyahu (apodado Bibi) no podrá evitar que haya una imagen de él sentado en el banquillo durante la lectura de los cargos en su contra.
Netanyahu pidió ayer ser eximido de atender porque requería que si equipo de guardaespaldas también asistiera, por lo que según argumentó, podía suponer una vulneración de las directrices del Ministerio de Salud para prevenir el contagio de la COVID-19.
Según el equipo legal del dirigente, su aparición personal no era necesaria en una audiencia judicial de carácter más bien técnico, pero la corte dijo hoy que no hay «explicaciones del peticionario para justificar una excepción» a la regla que requiere la presencia de los propios acusados para conocer sus cargos.
Tras ser acusado formalmente el pasado noviembre, el juicio contra Netanyahu debía comenzar a mediados de marzo, pero se aplazó a este 24 de mayo por las restricciones para frenar la propagación de la COVID-19, que dejó el aparato judicial del país a media máquina.
Sin embargo, las acusaciones en su contra no han evitado que pudiera mantenerse como primer ministro. Este pasado domingo juró su cuarto mandato consecutivo -el quinto de su carrera- y podrá seguir encabezando el Ejecutivo unitario que liderará con el centrista Benny Gantz durante un año y medio, hasta ser reemplazado por este con igual plazo.
