En marzo de este año, La Puerta de Damasco, una de las principales entradas a la Ciudad Antigua de Jerusalén, estuvo cerrada al tráfico por un período de tiempo después de otro intento de ataque terrorista en ese lugar.
El terrorista se acercó al puesto de control policial y sacó un cuchillo, amenazando a la policía fronteriza que estaba posicionada allí. Pudieron quitarle el cuchillo de las manos y someterlo antes de que alguien saliera herido. El atacante, al parecer residente de un barrio árabe en el este de Jerusalén, fue llevado para ser interrogado.
Lamentablemente, los ataques violentos en el área de la Puerta de Damasco son frecuentes. Esta concurrida zona ha sido un punto crítico para la violencia durante varios años. Uno de los ataques más tristes en este lugar resultó en la trágica muerte de Hadar Cohen, una joven policía de 19 años de edad, a causa de un tiroteo a principios de febrero de 2016.
